Server-side thumbnails grabbing from movie files

Hi, I've been having troubles finding a software that would enable me to grab thumbnails from various movie file formats on my server. When a user upload a movie on my server, I would like to take a few screenshots of this movie whether it is an .avi, .wmv, .mov or .rm. I've been trying ffmpeg for some time and it is far from easy to use and fails on many movies. I also used frameshots but it crashes a lot. All the softwares that I have used so far seem to be made for desktop use. Using them on Windows 2003 proves to be painful. At this point in time, I guess the best solution would be to convert my movies to FLV then take screenshots. Did anyone ever face this challenge?

Get a linux box, install ffmpeg with LAME and xvid and then there is an option for grabbing screenshots.

Thank you for your input. I may have better luck with ffmpeg on linux.
