Real-time avatar based Web applet possible?

I have a client that wants to have a sort of training and tutorial application where users can go through it something like WoW or The Sims. Is this even possible, Web based? Is there a name for this kind of technology I should search for? Is there even a customizable off-the-shelf software package I can look for? Thanks for any suggestions! -Liam

The closest thing I can think of that is browser based is lively. However it still requires a client to be installed (firefox or IE) and is windows only thus far.

Hmm, that looks interesting. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, it's just a glorified chat program. What we're needing to do needs to have pre-made "encounters" with possible multiple choice responses, to serve as a training tool. ...in addition to being able to "chat" with other trainees. Maybe we'll just have to do something in Flash without the interactivity with other trainees.... Thanks for the reply!

You could look at secondlife, it has a fairly full featured scripting language. You could program quiz like items and even build examples in world. However land is pretty costly (a good sized plot will run you 40+ dollars a month) and the machines need to be recent or they will run slooooow. I don't think your going to really find anything "out of the box" for this. Almost any route will require a bit of work :\

I thought of Second Life. That would be PERFECT! Except, the people that would be using it would likely not very terribly computer savvy, nor likely to have great PC's. So, it's out. Now that I think of it, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim's "5 Minutes to Kill Yourself" game is exactly what I'm looking to do (except...has nothing to do with violence) and may be more complex in that more options are available to handle encounters so that it can actually be a training tool. http://www.adultswim.com/games/game/...me=fiveMinutes But, this kind of environment is exactly what I'm looking for. (Except, having a multi-"player" feature would be great but impossible in Flash.) Would something like this have to be built "by hand" from the ground up, or are there basic customizable packages available for something like this? Thanks again for the reply!
