What traffic monitor would everyone recommend for sites that have as many as 5,000 to 10,000 hits an hour?

What is your idea of a traffic monitor? As in, what sort of information do you expect from it?

Initially they just want to know the number of users visiting the site, however, I imagine that will change pretty rapidly into a desire for more information.

most monitor system can view and sparse apache/lighttpd status pages. im sure the same for IIS if thats ur platform. Cacti is pretty good, install an SNMP agent pretty light weight as for as that goes. Let us know what you pick, as there are many many choices out there.
