htaccess file question

Greetings and good day to everyone ! I'm new here.. just registered. This would be my very first post. Great forum you have here.. I have a question regarding the .htaccess file that's under the public_html folder.. i need to ask about a certain line of code there.. but before I post those codes, is it safe to publicly post all the contents of the .htaccess file here in the forums ? ...my site is "web-hosted" by the way.. not in my local PC.

It's more then likely safe to post anything in your .htaccess files. You just wouldn't want to post a possibly related .htpasswd file or any file which contained crypted passwords...

Okay.. I'm completely blank when it comes to codes and programming, so please bear with me.. here's the line of code in the public_html .htaccess file ... is it there by default? what does it do? (in simple terms please)

It tells the webserver not to show particular types of files in directory listings (a small contribution to security, arguably, but pretty worthless). Most people don't use the automatic directory listings anyway, so in most cases it would be irrelevant - usually you'll have a file called index.html or index.php in every directory that will replace the automatic listing. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod...ml#indexignore

Thanks for the answers Lightwave and foobic .. if that code is ok to be in my public_html .htaccess file, then its best to let it be. -
