How to create vanity nameservers?

Posted by Acroplex, 01-08-2008, 03:36 PM
What do I need to do in order to create vanity DNS for domains hosted on my server? E.g. I want to use the same IP's but declared them as a different name, that displays the domain being hosted. Example: My server's DNS is ns1.server.com and ns2.server.com I host domain.com I want it to use ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as the DNS

That depends on what you are hosting them on?

You could just need to delegate the name servers to the domains your setting up. It's different from registrar to registrar

I need some info on how to do the server side part. After this is done, then I can delegate them at registrar level. Thanks in advance.

Register the namservers at your registrar first, with whatever IP's you want to use, then on your side, add the A records for each of the namservers you've added... does this make sense?

Yes, but can I do that by using the same IP's that already exist under a different name? Or would I need to utilize 2 new IP's?

Yes you can use them.

Definitely you can setup independent customized nameservers to each domain that you host without needing independent new ips. Most registrars allow to specify the custom nameservers along with the ip. You just need to put in the new custom nameserver records in the respective domains and use the same ip as your servers nameservers.
