Hosting just the web site on my server.

Hi, I've got a new client that just wants to use my server / services to host his website. He's happy to leave the email services etc. on his existing providers servers. I'm running a dedicated server, with centos and whm / cpanel. Does anyone know what I need to do in order to achieve this end. I'm guessing that I need the get the main hosting company that already hosts his website to update their dns records to point the a record to the ip address of my server. What do I need to do on my side? I need to create an account for the person, then possibly replicate the dns entries as the other main hosting server? Am I on the right track?

You should create a client with his domain in cpanel.Cpanel wiill create everything that you need. Then inform his prior hosting company to change the a record to point the A record to your ip and to keep the mx records as they are. On the other hand you could set you nameservers as primary and secondary so that you have total control over what is being done.

Setup the Account as Normal on your server: You then have two options: 1/ Ask his old host to change the A record to point to your IP (No Email Downtime) 2/ Change the Name Servers of the domain to your's and then you point MX records for the domain to his old host's ip. Problem then is their may/will be some small downtime with email while the Name Server's are resolving.

Oh I just thought of something. The client said that they want to use the existing webmail interface on the old hosting providers. I'll need to get him a url to access this, outside of his existing domain. Thanks for the advice again.

DNS A record for mail.domain.tld configured to point to their old hosting providers will solve your email scenario. So accessing http://mail.domain.tld/webmail will result in loading the Webmail interface of their old hosting providers. Provided the old hosting providers are running cPanel/Webmail. On another note, you also need to make sure that the entry for the domain doesn't exist in /etc/localdomains but instead should exist in /etc/remotedomains. Or else or emails from within the email server will be routed locally. You can manually make this change from the command line and execute /scripts/updateuserdomains or edit the MX of the domain from the cPanel of the account.

got it going thanks. http://www.bporco.ie nice and easy domain to remember. I suggested to the client that they purchase an easier domain to remember, but as you know, the client is right.
