cpanel backup configuration question

Posted by mrdwh, 03-27-2008, 06:10 AM
I'm running low on space ever since switching to incremental backup. I don't want to switch back to the full backups because the gzip was killing the server for an hour every night... I have the following setting turned on: Backup SQL Databases : "Per Account and Entire MySQL Directory" Will I get a full backup if I just do "Per Account" or am I missing something if I set it that way? I have some extra space on The Planet's NAS backup at /mnt/backup but not enough for the full backup. If I could split the backup in two that could work as well.

Hi, Could you not get a second system, or extra NAS space for backups? That's what we've done with our shared servers based at Softlayer, all the backups go to our rented space on their NAS, and if the backups grow bigger than 'x' where 'x' is the 90% of the size of the NAS space we just order an upgrade. Our UK hardware on the other hand has a system running NetBackup on all the servers, although we are aiming to switch back to running a centralised backup system using the cPanel backups at some point as it seems to been more reliable, and is easier to restore data from.

Yes, you will get a full backup using the "Per Account" setting. The other option just makes a separate backup of the entire MySQL data directory, which is redundant if you have the Per Account setting also enabled.

thanks very much. Oh, one more thing. So which directory do I now delete? only the cpbackup/daily/dirs/_var_lib_mysql_ cpbackup/weekly/dirs/_var_lib_mysql_ directory and subcontents? Or can I remove other stuff too that was put there by that setting? Last edited by mrdwh; 03-27-2008 at 01:59 PM. Reason: adding a question
