WHM -> PHP Configuration Editor -> Switch to Advanced
Change 'session.save_handler' value to 'files' (without quotes)
Restart apache

I instructed him to change CPANEL=stable in /etc/cpupdate.conf and run this:
/scripts/upcp --force
cd /var/lib/mysql
service mysql stop
find -type f -name "*.MYI" | xargs myisamchk -r
service mysql start
Seems to have fixed the issue, would be good if someone can replicate that fix.

I did force/downgrade cpanel from auto-curr to auto-stable and yes fix the problem.
I tried this on one of my toy vps not for production environment.
