FastCGI is a tool that compiles and caches the PHP bytecode, or CGI when a script is executed. If it is run a second time the cache is used, meaning it's faster. For high load sites it's a good idea. If you expect a lot of traffic and it's just a checkbox on your setup I'd enable it.

For the wordpress blog install supercache. The pages will load very fast using lighttpd.
