Supermicro air shroud

Posted by BostonGuru, 11-29-2008, 04:34 AM
Supermicro air shroud I just bought a supermicro 1U barebones system. Inside the case was an air shroud which appears to channel air from the blowers across the CPU. I installed processors, memory, etc and went to close it up, but could not seat the shroud in such a way that i could then close the case without having to really force it. I then realized that if it was supposed to stay in there, it probably would attach to something. I've concluded that the purpose of the air shroud is to keep air flowing over the CPU if you decide to run the machine with the top open while working on it. Can somebody please verify this? There is nothing on the supermicro site about the air shrouds, but i figure such a section would be too trivial for those who know what they are doing. Thanks.

You are talking about the thin little flimsy piece that attaches directly to the fan (black?) If that is the case then you can actually look at the sides, it has perforation marks that you can tear away to fit around caps and such. I'd do my best to keep it on. Yea its maybe 8x10 1/16" thick piece of black plastic with 3 vertical fins dropping down from it. I do not see any place to attach it to anything--there are a couple of drill holes but nothing that lines up with them on the case. There are about 8 u-shaped holes cut into it which look like you could do something with the remaining inner tab.

Yea, that is a little bit different than what I was thinking, but if you could upload a few pics somewhere that might give me a better idea. Once the case lid is on though typically if the fans are parked right next to the heat sink then everything is in a good position for good airflow. Run it all buttoned up and monitor your temps while running few benchmark tests. __________________Dedicated Servers - dave@hivelocity.net - 1-888-869-HOST(4678)Viva Hivelocity "THE SERVER STUD" - Award Winning Hosting Managed Dedicated Servers.
