From what I've heard/seen, LiteSpeed Web Server is becoming a good platform for company/individuals to host on. Hosts such as HawkHost and others have already made the switch.

Or try lighttpd or nginx. Which to use depends on what you are doing. If providing commodity web hosting you might go down different routes. If you are running custom apps, or have a dedicated server which you've got control over how the apps are run, then either lighttpd or nginx may be a very good choice. Once upon a time I ran a political site for a national party in my country - a custom application - under lighttpd. You've asked for opinions but have given zero sense of how you intend to use the web server (i.e. is it for commodity hosting or not, with a "control panel" or not, custom apps or not, dedicated to a forum app or not...) so any opinions offered will have little meaning out of context.

They have a website: http://www.litespeedtech.com where they do indeed discuss performance vs apache (and others maybe).

We moved over to Litespeed recently on our shared and its been running great, noticed performance increases, lower page load times, lower loads. Great differences for not much more per month. Its easy to switch over, and switch back to Apache if it doesn't work out, I'd suggest to contact the guys at Litespeedtech, to also try out a trial

If you want httpd.conf/.htaccess compatibility and effortless configuration, there is only one good answer and that's LiteSpeed. I wouldn't go back to apache for any reason.

Litespeed is good check their pricing and easy to configure and nginx is another option which is free but you should be knowledgeable enough to setup it.

A few of our dedicated customers had us install LiteSpeed on their boxes. It makes a bid difference. The other day one of the boxes was running a load of only about .10, we switched over to Apache and the load with the same traffic levels was about 1.5. The machine was a Core2Duo with 8GB of RAM. We're thinking about switching over some of our shared boxes, especially since management is so simple via their web interface. Another benefit is that Apache compiles take 10 minutes rather then the 30 or 45 (and sometimes longer) that EasyApache has been taking lately.

I've made my switch to LiteSpeed and couldn't be happier.

I will second that. I have used lighttpd, and had some stability issues. Switched to nginx, and haven't looked back since.
