domain problem

Posted by JMele, 04-13-2009, 03:34 PM
i have a domain setup on windows server 2003 & when i try to logon all it says 'The system cannot log you on due to the following error: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please try again or consult your system administrator.' the problem is this is the domain controller itself; how could i go about fixing his if i can't even get into RDP. i can get KVM if i really have to but its not cheap. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Does the controller have a valid DNS record?

Have you made sure the domain is resolving fine? Did you try with the IP? How are you trying to login?

This is a known issue with Server 2003 terminal servers and MS has a hotfix for it. The latest SP should also fix it. Here is a workaround: If you are unable to log into server as "local computer" you will need someone physically at server to do this. Open registry editor, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\ create a DWORD value called IgnoreRegUserConfigErrors and assign the value 1 to this property. The reg key causes Windows to ignore errors if the server can't connect to the DC. If you are not using Terminal Services there is nothing left to do. If this is a terminal server you should install the latest service pack or contact MS and get Fix163491.
