We have an abnormal server load because of clamd. Why is this?

Hi, I have experienced this as well. The cPanel team were unable to work out why it was doing this and so uninstalled it for me. That led to a problem with MySQL on my server (the monitor kept thinking it was down so restarted it all the time when it didn't need restarting), but they resolved these issues for me. I would suggest contacting them.

Any program that scans every email is naturally going to be resource intensive. Depending on how much mail you get will determine how intensive it is. It is very common to see scanning programs, especially clamav, using high amounts of resources.

Agreed. One possible solution short of disabling clamd is to "renice" or "nice" clamd so that it has low priority. Your users won't mind if their email is delayed 5 extra seconds because clamd was checking it, but they will mind if it takes 5 seconds to query mysql. Lower the process priority of clamd and all should be fine.

Don't see any mention of your version number. Our experience was similar until the most recent 0.95 (and now 0.95.1) update.
