Overselling please explain

In my search for a reasonably priced reseller account for my small webdesign business clients, I am getting more and more confused. I see the term Overselling used and have no clue what it means. How does one determine if a webhost is reputable? By reputable I mean, if I pay a yearly rate, will they still be there for that year?? I read all about Cyberwings and am afraid to get involved with someone like that. One more question, does length of time in the hosting business mean more reliability/stability? I am so confused. I have been with hobbyhost.com for 4 years, recently there have been problems. The server has been down now for 3 days. I dont want to change as up until now things have been great there, but my clients are screaming at me. I need to make a decision, but want it to be a wise one.

Normally signing up for contract is not a wise thing to do. You may get a cheaper rate for a year contract, but as far as I concern, nobody knows that the certain company would turn out into what in the future. For overselling, I am not sure which "overselling" you're exactly talking about. It may be bandwidth overselling, disk space overselling, etc. To determine the reputation of one's company, it depends on how you look at the word hosting. Somebody may also say a cheap value host would not offer a good support or vice versa. Try search the certain host on google and WHT and read what others think about them. Maybe good, maybe bad. As for most of them are offering 30 days money back guarantee (make sure you read their TOS, whether or not you need a 30 days advanced notice on cancellation). You may give the host a try, cancel it and get your money back if you don't like it. Besides, expect a hosting company have no downtime is totally unacceptable. Hosting may have downtime, but not long-period. For what you've said above, 3 days seems a bit long for me. Does length of time in the hosting business mean more realibility and stability. I can say yes. If one's company can stay in business for few years, it really means they're doing their job well enough to keep their life survive within the competitors. Web hosting business is very competitive, so does every online business. To keep itself being a long run on the web is not an easy thing to do.

Yeah, Shawn was a crook. Check out http://cyberwingsowesmemoney.com/ for details. http://support.2checkout.com/forums/...377&boardid=17 Everybody should avoid Cyberwing like companies. He did wrong with his clients as well as given a big shock to hosting inductry. Due to CEOs like Shawn now, people afraid to trust on hosting companies.

1: Overselling -> simply selling more than what you have. E.g. bandwidth overselling. Let's say you have 10Gigs of b/w in total.... and you sell 20 accounts with 1 GB of b/w. So you're overselling 10Gigs... but, not all of your 20 accounts will use that 1 GB, so you're basically playing the #s.... Imho think it's a really bad idea for diskspace though 2: don't pay a year for reseller accounts.... 3: reliabiltiy/stability re. the server? Not really... but a company that has been around for a while must be doing something good, right? Anyways, it's difficult to tell... 4: 3 days in 4 years? Yes, 3 days is not acceptable, but if it's the only problem you ever experienced?... I dunno if moving is worth it then, unless you think it's going to get worse.... Anyways, do a search and you can find what the 'choice of the month' is...
