Web Hosting, Domain Name, and Server Issues

Dear All, I have a few questions to ask so please bear with me as im relatively new to this game! To give you an idea of the setup i will start off with what i have in place: A Dell Poweredge 2900 server with windows 2003 r2 and IIS 6 running with bt business broadband in the office and 5 static ip adresses. Now i have got several domains hosted from this server and i have accounts with easily.co.uk, fasthosts.co.uk, and godaddy.com i have tried to register a nameserver with one of my domains on the godaddy.com called ns1.buchansremote.co.uk and ns2.buchansremote.co.uk to point to 81.143.0.193 now i have went into my easily account and tried to change one of my domains from a web forward to an external server and entered the ns1.buchansremote.co.uk. and ns2.buchansremote.co.uk. and i get a message saying that the ip address is not found. Is there something else i should be doing for this or should i be using another company to register the name server for my server! I did try googling about name servers and who provides you with them but to be honest i did not get very much information! Ok at the moment all my domains are setup as web forwards and e-mail forwards. e.g buchansdakar.co.uk is setup with easily to forward to http://81.143.0.193:4999 which isnt the right way to do it i believe! Please do not laugh at my setup! I have got my IIS 6 domains all with a unique tcp port for this to work but if i change to the name server will i need to make them all port 80 and setup host headers e.g buchansdakar.co.uk in the host header so it knows what folder to point to? I know that one of you techy Gurus will hopefully be able to assist. Thanks in advanced. <> Last edited by anon-e-mouse; 12-13-2009 at 11:30 PM.

Well, either you didn't succeed or you're waiting godaddy's system to update the .uk nameservers, because at present they don't know about your ns1. Provided you followed the instructions here, and everything went ok, it should be just a matter of time. GD updates .com and .net nameservers very quickly (within minutes, typically) but IDK about .uk. You also need to add A records for those nameservers at godaddy (or at your new nameserver, if you're going to start using that instead of domaincontrol.com)

I had added the nameserver properly but didnt realise i had to add it to the a record host so i have now set this and it seems to have allowed me to move forward on easilys panel to use my nameserver! However on IIS6 if i have set the name server on all my domains to ns1.buchansremote.co.uk and ns2.buchansremote.co.uk how does IIS determ what website folder to look in as i have several domains hosted from this server! is that when i need to set the host headers to the website e.g www.buchansdakar.co.uk would i set the host header value for this site in IIS6 to www.buchansdakar.co.uk or just buchansdakar.co.uk and should the tcp port always be 80 for all my domains or should it be unique ? I hope one of you guys can help Thanks Again in advanced Kind Regards, Jack Buchan JDB Solutions

Can't help you with IIS setup but what you're talking about is virtual hosting - multiple websites on the same IP address and same ports (80 for http and 443 for https). As you say, the server determines which site to serve based on the Host header in the request. The .uk nameservers still don't know about your ns1 so it looks like you haven't registered it successfully.

Yes, if you want both URLs to pull up the website: http://buchansdakar.co.uk http://www.buchansdakar.co.uk Standard http port is 80, so if you have not changed that on your network then yes, both host headers on the IIS site would use port 80.
