How to compete with host's giving 100gb band for 8bucks??

Posted by turnkey, 03-01-2004, 08:06 PM
Ok we are a turnkey business website building company, that hosts sites as well but that is not our major business profit. We owned our hosting servers at one time, and found our selfs with to much time and money spending on upgrading, protecting, looking out for them and all that. Found that resell plans (with a good reseller company) work GREAT for us. But the question is this, How the heck do we compete when you have sites giving away 100GB of band for 8bucks a month. How can they do this with out overloading there servers? And who uses that much band any HOOT. Thanks any advise on how to compete is great.

Hi Turnkey, My advise would be to not try and compete with these hosts. I mean really, why bother ! The number of people that actually shop for hosting based on these specs is low. The market for people requiring a reasonable amount of space and bandwith for small to medium business sites is much higher. This market segment is much more concerned with uptime and customer service. Try to define what your specific value add is and focus on marketing to a target audience thats best defined by your value.

Target different people. There targeting people with small personal sites, that want alot, for little, that don't really know about hosting. Possibly target some small to medium sized businesses who know you cant get all that for so cheap and good support. Just express that your an upper level host, for an upper level customer.. Look at rackspace. There not the cheapest by far, but there well off

Yeah thanks Guys, I was thinking of putting together a Marketing package for my hosting clients I hope this will add value to the hosting and like you said focus on what is important to my clients getting started as new business owners and that is marketing thanks

For real. 100gb of bandwidth on most sites would be 450K+ people a month. Not likely for your average personal or small business site. Even a high graphix site like mine could have 250K visitors on that BW. Here's the deal. every host I've ever had I chose because the email response time was good. Just answer fast man!

You will not be able to compete with price. You must compete on value. How about selling SUPPORT and SERVICE that comes with a free web hosting package?

Dont compete with them. They wont be here in 6 months and you will have the clients anyway.

2 simple words: You don't!

Simple answer: Don't try and compete with these types of webhosts and the majority of these types of webhosts will not be around in the long term, less alone the short term.

I agree with everyone else. This is not your core business. Since you sell the Turn Key Websites and that is where your leads will probably come from just concentrate on selling to them. Perhaps when you sell the Turnkey website it should come with a hosting contract. Whats a turnkey website without turnkey hosting right?
