Connection pooling error

One of my customers frequently encounters error in his asp.net application. He gets the following error Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. The error goes away after the application pool is restarted. I also see a lot of open connections in the SQL 2005 server from the application's sql login with each connection showing status as sleeping and cmd as AWAITING COMMAND. Are both these related to each other? What could be wrong with his application?
