does data center location matter?
Posted by mihalw, 07-10-2004, 08:04 PM |
hi
I need a fast & reliable (that's the most important!) hosting for my clients. Having searched some companies I can see that MOST of them have data centers located in US. I'm from Europe though and have some doubts - whether choosing US company is a good idea? Hosting needs to be really fast and 100% sure.
Does anyone from Europe use EXTENSIVELY US company as a reseller? Does your clients feel the difference?

Well, it depends on the contents. If it is just basic web hosting, the difference could be a second or two lapse but mostly un-noticable.
If you are hosting game servers or streaming media then the issue of latency may come into play.

I have a european company and my servers are in the US. No problems...
Rackcheck.co.uk has great offers in Europe, I will try them soon.

Well, I'm using surpasshosting.com at the moment and it's a little slow actually. It feels when using email and ftp, less with web pages. I'm still searching for a reliable host in Europe. Thanks for Rackcheck.co.uk, but they offer only dedicated, I need some reselling host for now.
thanks for answers,
Mike

Connections between US and Europe are fairly good (so i hear), some data centers are not very reliable (for exampel managed.com). Others are quite reliable. Managed.com at one stage had outages of nearly a day at a time, this is something to take into consideration.

Maybe try ABOVENet? Think it's very reliable...

In the US, NAC has an excellent connection to the UK and Europe, definitely the best ping / capacity we have found. However, if you are on a fast connection such as broadband, you'll notice a good improvement on sites hosting nearer to home.

As long as the datacenter has good connectivity through their bandwidth providers you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

not only is the connectivity important, the reliability of the datacenter is very important as well. Im not saying about the uptime/downtime. It's whether the particular DC is trustable. I've heard a lot of stories about DC just taking away people's server for strange reasons. Just some thoughts. Dont wanna pinpoint any DC though

We are in the Asia and only noticed a lil different in page response, other than that, its all good.
Do you find yahoo.com slow?

Datacenter location is not the primary factor. You have to take more things into consideration: support speed and quality, not overloaded servers, reliability, reviews (e.g. on WHT, etc.). I wouldn't choose European host with poor support just because its datacenter is closer. I think it is hard to find very good and cheap reseller in Europe (with servers located in Europe).

Hi mihalw
I run four sites from servers in the US, and as far as speed is concerned, I have no problems. I am based int he UK and all my visitors to two of my sites are UK visitors.
The only things to consider are support - don't forget that with time differences, support isn't always available when you would expect.
All in all, I have not had many problems using a US based provider. I certainly think the cost savings outweigh the problems as it is over half the price!!
