DNS reverse zone setup on a VPS
Posted by dmdip, 02-24-2010, 10:27 AM |
I am setting up a website (call it mysite.com) on a VPS with debian lenny, and have been provided two exclusive IP addresses (say 11.22.33.44 and 11.22.33.45).
I have also created two private nameservers ns1.mysite.com and ns2.mysite.com. The domain (mysite.com) and the two nameservers have been successfully registered at godaddy.
I have done the DNS set-up as given in standard write-ups. However, the command host 11.22.33.44 returns the error :
Host 44.33.22.11.in-addr.arpa. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Doing a named-checkconf reports no error, and named-checkzone on the two zones also reports OK.
Does the error mean that I have to register 44.33.22.11.in-addr.arpa somewhere, just as I had to register the name servers (ns1.mysite.com and ns2.mysite.com) at godaddy before I could use them?
A second doubt is about declaring the zone 33.22.11.in-addr.arpa. in the rdns declaration. This seems to imply that I own all the 256 values of x in 11.22.33.x, whereas I own only 11.22.33.44 and 11.22.33.45. If the zone declaration is an error, what zone should I actually be creating?
The relevant zone declarations in BIND 9 DNS are :
And the contents of the files are :
mysite.com.hosts :and 11.22.33.rev :Would greatly appreciate an answer to the problem!

Your provider will need to register the PTR records for you. You will not be able to control those from your VPS.

Hello,
Do you have the DC logins. Then you can set the reverseDNS from their API.

Lea - Not sure what a DC login is, but I doubt I would have it, as all I have got are the two IPs and the minimal debian lenny install that I had ordered from the hosting company. Would like to know though if I am missing a trick as I am trying to set the box up without the hosting company's assistance as far as possible!
@enotchnet - Thanks. This is what I had suspected, but wanted to be sure before asking the hosting service.

dmdip everything that you`ve done is right but everything depends from your provider.

Shoot a support ticket with your issue. It can be fixed by them very easily if your hosting support is excellent.

BobyKirov, Lea - Hosting support has been pretty decent so far, and this shall no doubt be a good test. Will write to them in a couple of days (a few more issues to be resolved with them) and will post the outcome. Thanks.

To close this thread, contacted the hosting people and they fixed this within a couple of hours. So, for anyone facing anything similar, that's what needs to be done.
Thanks everyone for your inputs.
