Reseller Host Recommendations & Questions

Posted by nwautopage, 07-07-2004, 01:29 PM
Hello, I'm currently a Reseller for another company (they're an alabanza reseller partner) and am considering moving to a different host that provides better reseller hosting options with the ability to resell to other resellers. 1.) Does anyone have experience or feedback regarding the Reseller packages offered by hostnexus.com / resellernexus.com ??? (They use a combination of Cpanel & Web Host Manager (WHM) administration software. Some of their packages use the Plesk7 control panel.) 2.) I'm still learning about the various reseller options out there. If I go with a dedicated server somewhere (like The Planet) is it difficult or too expensive to set up the server with all the neccessary software to manage a reseller business? Is it better to go with a shared or semi-dedicated server that already is setup with all the neccesary server and reseller managment software? Some additional software I need to run will require the web server to support these. - PHP 4.1 + - MySQL - GDLibrary 2.0 + - cURL (AIM Method - authorize.net requirement) - mhash (SIM Method - authorize.net requirement) - phpMyadmin Thank you in advance for your advice! - Jeff -

Did you do a search on hostnexus.com and resellernexus.com on this forum? Also I would suggest sending presales emails to test their speed/knowledge. With the servers I believe all that software you mentioned comes with most servers free or is available free to install. The programs that cost the money when getting a server are things like Fantastico, RVSkins, programs like that. But the server will run without them so for the most part you can run a server on the price that is shown on the websites of companies like theplanet, superbservers, ev1 and others.

Let's not forget actually taking care of a server. Having a server from EV1, et al, is one thing, keeping it secure and stable is another. That cost's a lot more than the price tag shown on their websites On average, I would say each server prices a company approx $900 - $1200 per month, to keep up, secure, and stable. This is factoring in employee wages. Simon

900-$1200 would be if you had someone hired fulltime to take care of the server. I would think about $100-$150 ontop of what your server prices if you have an outsourcing company take care of your server and not hiring your own employee. Could be less could be more but that is my observation and people can disagree...

What control panel are you planning on running?

You'll probably find quite a few threads about HostNexus but not so many on ResellerNexus as it was only launched earlier this year. For some bizarre reason, even clients that find us through WHT don't come back to give feedback which is a bit of a shame. However, our own forum is very active and completely open. We have a team of long time members that moderate it and they never delete posts or threads etc so by surfing NexusPortal, you get a real good feel about the state of things.

even clients that find us through WHT don't come back to give feedback << I fall into that bracket Dog. I was actually only looking for a reseller at a different physical location at the time, for backup/contingency purposes. Had I been looking for a reseller in a normal scenario I would certainly have gone for it, as the package looked very attractive indeed. And oh yes... it helps that you have delivered 100% uptime on our existing account. Thanks.

Hi Jenni, Yep, was aware of why you were researching additional accounts and that thread you have going should be very valuable to people shopping for hosting based on data center. Not even sure which server you're on but:

It's the same thing for us as well. I guess it's because they have no reason to come back now they've got a stable host.

Review of ResellerNexus; We have our main site [Net-Trend.com] and several small accounts hosted off network from [The Planet] for redundancy/communication issues. Recently we signed up for an account with ResellerNexus and it has been smooth sailing so far especially when compared to a previous account we had with another company. Uptime is good and support times are reasonable. Keep it up Laurence.

I think you should try seaservers .com

You better watch or the mods might ban you, I think I have seen you add to posts like this a few times now.

Thank you all very much for the feedback in this thread so far. Does "Plesk" by "SW Soft" offer similar capabilities to "CPanel" combined with their Web Host Manager (WSM) software? I was considering some other hosting companies that are members of the online "Better Business Burea" and have won hosting awards, etc. After doing some searches on many of these companies, I've heard horror stories. Any feedback out there on "ValueWeb"? They once received they "Editors Choice" award by PC Mag and seem to offer some pretty resonably priced dedicated hosting packages. Their reseller plans don't seem too hot though when compared to others like Nexus. I saw that Nexus is an Austrailian based company with its data center servers located in the USA. Does anyone know if Nexus also owns/maintains their own data center? Thanks Again!!!

No, we just lease our servers at Fortress ITX.

Hi Laurence, Does your "Plesk7" by "SW Soft" offer similar capabilities to "CPanel" combined with their Web Host Manager (WSM) software? I see that Nexus offers various different Reseller packages at "hostnexus.com" and "resellernexus.com".

It might be weird coming from me, but I recommend you to be very careful about many hosting awards and the vast majority of the hosting tops. Users here (at WHT) know for a fact that some of the awarded hosts out there are not worthy, that money must be securing their "top" positions because real evidence actually stacks up against them. Check what real customers have said about each host. It's a lot safer this way. Search WHT, use Google. BBB reports can be of some help too.

Don't forget the HostQuote feature, it could always see some more use

Plesk 7 and cPanel are 2 tools that essentially do the same thing. Both are popular - some prefer Plesk, some prefer cPanel. At the end of the day it's all about personal preference. cPanel has a few extra features and Plesk has a nicer interface. Plesk allows resellers to control everything from one interface and cPanel separates reseller and end user into 2 interfaces (cPanel and WHM). In our case, both services (Plesk on HostNexus and cPanel on ResellerNexus) are run by the same team, both services run off the same type of mahine (Pent IV 3.06ghz) and both services have those servers in the same data center. It's all about personal preference for the GUI that will manage your accounts.

Thanks for the helpful info. Speaking of data centers, how is "Fortress ITX/DedicatedNOW" progressing with their big data center move at the moment? clifton.fortressitx.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24 How large of a data center do they have in comparison to companies like "Alabanza" & "The Planet" and will this move improve their capacities? How long have they been around? Thanks again !!!

Posted by nwautopage, 07-13-2004, 12:58 AM
Thanks for the reminder. I'll probably give "HostQuote" a spin...

Posted by NexDog, 07-13-2004, 01:42 AM
The move is just about complate. Out of 1500 servers, I think there are 5-6 still down. We did pretty well with just 12 hours downtime on most of our servers. I don't know how big Alabanza or the Planet is but FortressITX is currently 7,500 sq ft (raised floor). Connectivity is VERY impressive: MCI OC48 Full Sonnet Ring, with Dual OC192’s being installed now. Backbone bandwidth providers are MCI and Above.net and Level3 and Global Crossing will be added in the near future. DN were are NAC for 3 years and has 1500 servers currently. The service and support is beyond reproach. Never had a support request go unanswered for more than 15 minutes and the team there bend over backwards to help.
