I just chat with a host company and he give me Ip for checking there speed. Can any one tell me using Ip how i check that host good or not?

Use ping and tracert (or traceroute on Linux/UNIX).

ask him for a file to test to so you can check download speed over a period of time. Also ping and traceroute as stated by above poster.

Ask for a test file and IP to ping, you'll be able to get an idea of their server speed that way.

Well having an IP will allow you traceroute (in unix/linux) or tracetr in windows. Having said that, this is really a poor test, as it really only tells you about the route between your server and the IP. The host certainly isn't responsible for the net beyond their router, and therefore it isn't much of a test. Some people will go elsewhere if the route between their machine and their host is consistently bad, though everyone else in the world might be getting excellent ping rates. Cheers Jeff

ping the ip like the others have said

what response times would you all consider acceptable? Also what download speeds would you say are good for a 20MB test file?

It depends where you are testing from (geographical location and your line speed). You should have good pings from all locations, distance is a big factor here, so specific times cannot be given. Also consistency and lack of packet loss are good things to look out for.
