VNC screen is now all black?
Posted by WootWoot, 05-01-2010, 06:37 PM |
Hi everyone,
It seems like I can't access my server via a VNC anymore: the screen is all black and the cursor is a "X".
What's going on?
Thanks!

Have you contacted your datacenter? May be some n/w related issue?

Thanks for the reply David.
Absolutely not. It used to work and I have another user (root) which may still be accessed. One using port ":1" and the other port ":2".
I assume the user may be logged off or something. Perhaps some commands to logoff/login this user via root would help.
If I try to restart the VNC client, it says it is allready working. Even though I try to stop it first.

Try going in via SSH and check the /tmp directory for session files for whichever desktop you were using (gnome / kde / windows, etc).
Delete those and try again. If you were using gnome there's a well known bug with vnc that causes the black screen issue - I've solved it myself by following the process I just listed.

Make sure it's still booting into gnome-session , It's possible you lost gnome at some point.
If not find your .vn file and add gnome-session to it.

David fixed up that problem perfectly and professionally, now works #1. Thanks!
It was indeed something about the lock files in /tmp. Thanks to both of you as well.
