UltraUnix Review

Posted by lazee, 06-18-2004, 01:46 AM
We'll I've been using the UU reseller for about 3 months. I'm leaving them because I needed reliable Tomcat hosting. Since I'm leaving, it's a good time to write my 3rd WHT review mainly about their level of support On the whole I strongly recommend them for reseller selling. Though sometimes it seems like a 1 man show, because for the most part, I'm always interacting with "Wong". No noticable downtime. If there was a downtime, I did not notice it. Note that I'm sure there were downtimes, because emails are sent out for planned maintenance about patching apache or cpanel and such, but I didn't notice anything. Wong is extremely helpful guy. Does try hard to please a customer, definitely a plus. Sometimes I feel like there are 2 or 3 Wongs there or he only takes catnaps. One incident, my index.html was hacked by someone who left his ICQ number. I suspected it was not a compromised password because of the message left. Advise UU to check their box. Was advised back that their box was secure which left me with a "blah" feeling, and also due to the fact that the logs were deleted already for space issues, then was again contacted later and I found out Wong went and contacted the person on ICQ and found out that there was a flaw in one of the other customer's script which was the cause. Support like that makes a good reseller host. Always answered trouble tickets within a few hours at the latest, usually ranging within 2 hours to 20 minutes. If you are looking for a reseller, you really can't go wrong with Ultraunix. One thing i did learn (too late unfortunately) was that they have 60 day advance-notice-fax-your-cancelation policy according to their TOS. the fax part was not enforced but when I canceled, I was advised of an 1 month extra charge and that the account had to be open for another month. I can understand this rule for a dedicated server / colocation due to the fact that you don't want an idle server sitting around so the admin would want an advance notice. But this is a silly rule for a shared hosting. Why do you need 30 days to remove a cpanel account and stop the billing? Everyone's TOS is their choice though and so is the everyone's opinion of it. Also noticed a few extra things in the TOS about 30% media file prohibition/restriction so I definitely recommend to read the TOS carefully. Now I know that everyone should always read the tos, (yeah yeah) but everyone knows that not everyone always does because they are the usual same copy/paste. just like no one reads 'authentic' customer testimonials. But this is just a friendly reminder. On the whole though, UU was an excellent experience. This statement is backed by being fully content of their support. The reason I'm leaving is because their jsp hosting side is too limited and too weak. I don't like the idea of accounts being suspended without prior warning for strict enforcement of limited resources. I have the conversation with Wong in my chat logs somewhere but basically going somewhere else for JSP reselling sounds like a good idea. Another positive thing is that Wong tells it like it is. Hope this review is informative for those of you looking up Ultraunix. Wong's account is disabled for some reason from posting here so that's something i'd love to know the reason of. Keep up the good work. www.ultraunix.net Last edited by lazee; 06-18-2004 at 01:57 AM.

That is a good review. As far as I know, Wong's account is disabled when he sent mass pms to get the log in info to move a client from a dying company to his. As far as I know, UU is not a one man show, Wong has many patners. I do agree about that part where he doesn't sleep though, Malaysia is exactly 12 hours different from the US...

Yeah, he answered my tickets pretty quick(<1hour on aveage I believe) and honest about things he is not sure of(moving a small site from plesk 6 panel, he is not too familiar with it since they don't have plesk)

Hi, Just like to clerify with regards to the 30% media file prohibitation; we do not normally enforce it, as we like to sometimes close one eye to keep the client pleased. However, we do reserve the right to forbid it. On a side note, I would like to state that we will be amending our TOS over the next two months, as we are busy at the moment. In regards to the 30 days prior notification, clients in the past have decided to cancel their account right after the billing period is over, sometimes even on the day itself! This causes a problem, because they enquire why they have been charged, then request a refund, etc.... We do this for the sole purpose of not incorrectly billing clients. As for partners, well, I am one of them. However, I don't normally deal with support. Mostly the other things in the background in relation to the company. I hope this answers all the questions! Good review and sorry about your cancellation troubles.

Thanks for the great review, lazee. Damn, I didn't read carefully about the TOS either. Looks like I need to cancel my account asap to avoid the extra charge. I also decided to leave UU, mainly because of the SSH access issue. I am a unix guy, and is so used to vi editor and C/Perl/PHP/Java programming/debug under Unix/Linux environment that a shell access is like air to my breathing. Wong promoised me SSH access when I subscribed to them one and a half month ago, though officially they do not support SSH access. Once I became his customer, however, things become different. My intial SSH accesses got lost during their Cpanel upgrade recently, and after I sent requests again to him to fix it, Wong appeared to be very reluctant to re-open the SSH accesses for me. Though I feel disappointment because of the broken promise, I understand it's their official policy. I don't want to beg for it because there are so many good hosts around the world that allow SSH access. I already decided to move to hostforweb last night. They grant me SSH accesses 20 minutes after I sent a request email to them, although I have to put a detailed description why I need SSH. Anyway, I am happy that I got my SSH back, so now I can breathe normally again.

I did email them and got a reply within a few minutes. The same with my follow up. I think it's night in Malaysia. Malaysians are smart, apparently. I sent most of my Tsunami money to a Malaysian charity because there were first on the ground in Banda Aceh.

This is Malaysia A friendly and helpful country, definitely not terrorist-infested territory.

Yeap Malaysia is a good neighbour to have (when it is not election time) : ) Congrats to Wong on the recognition of good work done by your users! in WHT easy to get a bad review, very difficult to get a good one.

I am a Malaysian, thanks for the complement, but I cant figure out from your short post how Malaysians are being smart, as noted by you. =) Joshua

I just have to add my two cents to the review by saying that UU has been great to me since I moved out of my last host/reseller. The servers are stable, speed is great and the support is unbeatable. I do feel like Wong is awake 23/24 hours because no matter when I send an email, I get an answer back in reasonable time. Love the company, the support and the price.

Are you getting smart with me, Joshua?

i've a reseller plan with UltraUnix since one year, and now i could speak about Quality of service. Excellents servers, regulars updates, specifics installation of modules on demand, the best services i've never used since 5 years for an php addict user. ( in the beginning , i was affraid by the lack of msg in the forum, but now i know why. All the support is quicky provided by emails and tickets :-)

I second that, for a customer to go out of their way and write such an in depth review, really says something about the service you provide. Nice job UltraUnix
