Basic lesson learned - cheap price is not the driver

Posted by jkotinis, 03-21-2005, 05:09 AM
I am new in reseller hosting and I already had my first bad experience with freenukehosting.com Main reason is to host my primary business and next some clients in the short term providing them with hosted services. My only and one driver at first was the price since I thought the security , availability and reliability was something guranteed. I had 2 accounts with them, one hosting and one reseller for a few $ with space of 5 and 10 Gb and bandwith 50 and 100 GB. Everything was ok for some 3 weeks and I had managed to put some staff online. The only worried thing was that they never replied to a single email. But except some problems with a php script, I could manage the other staff myself. Since I need a professional and always available web presence for my primary business including mail services, I should be very curious about what availability and reliability means. Some days ago my sites, their site also became unavailable. After 3 days they came back and as I understood from the postings in their forum their server was hacked. I sent them an email asking for a backup at least of some of my sql databases and some files. No answer yet. It doesn't matter , I just cancelled my subscriptions, (not a word of a refund anyway), and I moved quickly to another company (Hostgator) after some little research. My driver this time was number of hosted clients ,reviews, feautures and then price. I hope things will be much better there. But I should say that they response time to my emails (setup questions) is in within 5-10 minutes. It's a good sign.

Welcome to WHT jkotinis! This was a great post and I hope others read of your experience prior to trusting a host. Good luck with HostGator! -Matthew

Great that you realized before it cost you even more damage. Seriously, for a business critical website, it is wise to spend a few extra bucks a month, isn't it?

Not replying to any of your e-mails? That should have been a red alarm there, any web host who seems to have gone AWOL, is a web host heading for trouble.

Wow, Joshua! What a good comment you gave on hostgator... LOL I seriously agree that when you look for a host, the most important thing is response time, ability to answer your questions accurately, presales and lastly, pricing. Enjoy your new host. Good Luck!

Thank you for your comments. The basic idea for writting this post at first was to write somewhere my experience so other people who are looking for a host , read one more opinion so they can avoid similar situations. Also is not bad to write for some behaviors from hosts like the one I had at first . Since I'm quite new in these forums and in this certain business (but I'm in the IT industry - business apps for about 15 years) , I can see that there are so many categories of hosters out there and also so many different kind of requirements. so there is space for expirementals where price seems to be the 1st priority, no critical data in there, there is room for small business who are looking for uptime and security at a fair price there is room for real professionals that are looking for availability , security , enough bandwisth and also for a backup site that in the worst case can give them their web presence no matter what, ane these people have to pay a bit extra. And in all situations there is always support, that is a critical factor for many of the above categories. There should always being a balance between what you ask for and what you get for it. Anyway, this is life
