External Mail Server Question

Posted by AdAgency, 11-06-2010, 07:28 PM
I am using a mail service such as fusemail which means I'm using ZERO local mail features. Is it safe to completely disable Dovecot / Courier since all of my e-mail is being handled remotely? E-mails sent from local contact forms do not use the local mail exchange server do they? Thanks in advance

It depends on how they're configured or coded. They very much *should* use the local mailserver, but not everybody does. That said, you should be able to disable Dovecot, as that only handles POP3/IMAP, without any issue. If Courier is your MTA (i.e. it handles SMTP) it might be advisable to leave it running, but perhaps firewall incoming SMTP connections, or only bind it to 127.0.0.1, just to be safe, and to allow any scripts running on the server to deliver mail with sendmail rather than SMTP.
