is a 1 to 20 ratio good?

Posted by Bill-zilonhost, 04-03-2005, 01:36 AM
What is the average space to bandwidth ratio offered for reseller accounts?

Generally, a ten to one ratio (bandwidth to HD space) is a good figure to go by. Ex.) 4GB HD space and 40GB bandwidth.

Is there anything wrong with twenty to one?

I don't see anything wrong with 20:1 ... I can see particular websites that something like that would be appropriate for.

I think it really depends on what kind of site you are running and how popular it is, doesn't it?

10:1 is probably the normal, but 20:1 is fine too. Dan

Do you think a ratio of 1G space to 20G is a good offer? Does it make it appear as though the provider is overselling? We do not oversell, and that is the last impression we want to give. Please let us know what you think. Thank you in advance for your comments.

I would say that 1gb disk space to 20gb bandwidth is an excellent ratio. But Hey, that's the same size as one of our plans so I would think that wouldn't I On that ratio we only have very very few resellers that have 1gb space and required additional bandwidth on top of the 20gb.

That would be a fairly common ratio. You can do whatever ratio you want though, some hosts prefer to be high bandwidth hosts, others are large space hosts. Their is a niche for each. As far as overselling goes, a little bit of overselling is VERY common, the problem arises when overselling is taken to the extreme.

I agree that this is failry common ratio. But most of the time clients need more bandwidth. Very soon you will start to receive sales ticket on that.

I haven't seen a lot of shared sites where clients use more then that ratio, many think they need more but few actually use more then that. Their are some but overall you might be better to offer extra space/bw upgrades.

Overselling is an art, not just technicality.

I think you should be looking at the plans pricing and not just the space to bandwidth ratio to determine if there's any overselling involved.

That's about the ratio we run for our shared hosting plans, but for our reseller accounts, we run a 1 to 10 ratio. From our experience, customers seem most satisfied with that configuration.
