hi everyone. i have a big problem with my new server and i hope someone can help me. i bought a server with this info from xlhost : Core 2 Duo E8400 Closeout Dedicated Server Operating System: VMWare ESXi 4 Additional System Memory: 2GB DDR2 RAM Hard Drive Configuration: 250GB Hard Disk RAID Card: NO RAID Additional Bandwidth: 1500GB Bandwidth NIC: 100Mbps Connection i made 3 Virtual machine(VM) on vmware esxi 4... 1 with server 2003 ,and 2 with CentOs 5.5 on both Centos operating systems i installed Kloxo. (and my website running on these CentOs VMs) now my problem is : everyday about 11:30-12:30 something happening for my VMs that have CentOs. i have to power-off or reset them everyday. they crash both at the same time. why it happening??????????????????????????????????? i'm not familiar with system logs and i don't know which logs should i look to understand the problem. but my site don't have a lot a visitors (about 600 visitors per day) and i think this hardware should be enough for that i installed APF firewall, changed the ssh port number and Zend Optimizer for better security but i still have this problem. anybody have any idea??? please helm me i really feel sick these days i also installed Rootkit, but i don't know what should i do with its reports. is it possible that server hardwares have problem (like ram or cpu problems) ?? Have you submit the ticket to your provider before you came WHT? Just submit a ticket for your provider and they'll give me a answer

Do you have any cron jobs setup to run at that time? If it's having problems at the same exact time on a daily basis then that's where I'd start. Also, you should have contacted your provider first before coming to WHT if you haven't already. They will be able to assist you (hopefully) better then we can.

hi Ron, thanks for reply. i don't think any cron jobs running at that time. at less i did not setup anything , but maybe it running?? how i can find about this?? Netxons, i contacted to my provider but they just said maybe it's because of your hardware usage and in fact they said nothing useful ... how i can check my logs to find the problem?? can you help me about this? maybe i could send the logs (which logs and where they located? ) you need to see in here and you could find the problem?

Is the machine still responsive to ping when you restart it ? First stop should be to check /var/log/messages and the vmware logs to see if they report any problems during the time it goes down.

Maybe you're running out of RAM. How much RAM does the server have, and how much is allocated to the virtual machines?

You can do a few things just to run some quick checks. tail -f /var/log/messages free -m top -d 2 (and shift + P or shift +M to sort) ps -eo pcpu,pid,user,args | sort -k 1 -r | head -10 crontab -e - Check your server crontabs to see if there's anything running periodically. Feel free to post the output of these here and we can take a look and see if anything stands out.

after reset VMs everything is ok. but before reset and when VMs are down, i didn't test ping command from cmd yet(i guess not working too), but even SSH is too slow that reboot command not working i have 2GB ram on server. i gave 768MB to each linux VM ,and about 300Mb to server 2003 VM (but server 2003 is always ok and i have no problem with that and it never down). (also i was ok with this much ram for Linuxs on my past server and never had this kind of problems (however i was running HyperVm on my past server and in this new server i'm using Vmware) ) ram and cpu are share between all machines , maybe i should change this?? do you have any suggestion for best performance with this much of ram and cpu? thanks everyone. it's very kind of you that helping me. i'll send the logs also . one more thing. i'm not familiar with linux. and i know that i installed many programs and services (when i was trying to installing CenOS on Vm for first) that they are not necessary for a server . is it possible that an unnecessary linux service automatically running in that time and it's the reason of these problems?? i'll send the list of services that i installed on centOs in next post. i'll owe you if tell me which services are not necessary and should i remove to get better performances . please change the color of services that i should remove

I can tell you without even going through all of your installed packages that you are running out of memory. Give us the output of free -m Also, that behavior with SSH being slow means that your system is being taxed - generally, high CPU, high IO or low memory. I'll bet anything that you're going into SWAP. You're going to need to either reduce the amount of memory you're giving to these VM's or throw more RAM into your server.

A properly managed CentOS configuration could run off 128mb ram with no control panel and 256 at a bare minimum with a control panel. That amount of hits does not seem demanding even for shared hosting.

You mentioned the VM size needed for a site of 600-800 a day. Not sure what you should do with the rest of it. With your hit requirements I would save money and go with shared hosting or a low end VPS. Of course if you are using the dedicated server as a learning experience, getting the most out of the least resource amount per server will help you greatly in the future.

I have two 128mb ram VPs's at this moment. 1 running the CentMin auto install script and another running a custom lighttpd configuration. The lighttpd configuration gets about 5k hits per day with little to no issue. I am sure with proper optimization I could run triple that running static sites or a wordpress site. Not sure about forums and such though. That actual attachment you posted has a reasonable amount of resources inside of it. I would look at your actual servers resource usage and disk i/o at the time of the slow downs or issues that require a reboot.

ok. so i changed the option of VMs according of our talks in here, to see the results. i gave 256MB ram to each VM, so i have about 1256MB ram free, for Vmware esxi. now i have to wait till 11:30-12:30 tomorrow and see if it happening again or noT? i'll send server resources for disk i/o as you wanted, where i can find that logs you need to see??? (are they in /var/log/messages file too?))

Run sar -d 1 1 from the command line and then copy/paste that there. That'll give you an output of the disk activity at that time.

You probably don't have it installed. Do this from the command line: yum install sysstat That'll install the necessary packages. Then you can do "sar -d 1 1" and get the disk I/O report.

Heh, you actually cut off one of the most important parts. It should be like this: What is the last line, %util? Based on what I see there you have quite a bit of reads to your drive. Not a lot of writing, though. I'd keep an eye on the memory - if you notice it running out again, try clearing the cached memory and see if that helps. A bit of optimizing to reduce memory usage system wide (http server, mysql, etc.) would go a long way towards helping you conserve memory without throwing more hardware at it. Hopefully, though, you won't have anymore issues.

I would recommend hiring a server admin / server admin company to hop on for you and take a look. Just do a 1 off payment and they can tweak things. Every system / VPS is different and while articles are a nice reference, they're no substitute for experience.
