How do I move from one reseller to another?

I have a reseller account at one host. How do I move it all to another reseller account at another host?

What control panel is your current host on? Some hosts will help you move your account over to their machines if they are using the same control panel.

Are they using same control panel? If yes your new host should be able to help you in the movement of the sites. When I moved my sites seven months ago, my current hosts transffered all the sites (there were about 15 sites) from old host to new for free. And none of them faced any down time All sites were under cpanel/WHM.

CPanel/ WHM

I assume your current host won't be so helpful in zipping it all for you since you are leaving, but if it is a cpanel server there is still some hope. make a list of your customers accounts and log into each account's cpanel (port 2082) using the customer's username, and YOUR password (the reseller password). Then from the backup section, you can generate and download a full backup. Once you have those generated, give them to your new provider and they can import them into WHM and get you up and running.

Whay are you switching from your current host? If all your current clients are hosted on your name servers - you can just set up your new environment, migrate all the data, then just switch your name server IP's... The whole thing should be quick and painless...

See if they are willing to do the transfer for you. Since you mentioned cpanel/whm, it shouldn't be any problem at all.

Its not that hard to transfer accounts over using cPanel - unfortunately, from what I can see on my cPanel/WHM (chances are yours is the same) - you will have to backup/restore each account individually. If you look at the accounts cPanel you can see the Backup section, and from there you can do a full backup or a home backup. Personally I like to do a Full Backup to a remote server (my new hosts) and then I just replace all the directories in the "homedir" directory in the backup archive with the directories in my new hosts root (of the relevant account). This obviously copies the public_html (website) and then the mail folder which recreates all the mailboxes with their passwords (which is helpful if you client setup their own mailboxes and you dont know their passwords). In the backup archive there is also a mysql dump of everything mysql related which you can just use phpmyadmin to import. I think the only thing that needs be recreated is subdomains and forwarders. Hope that helps...

Your host has the ability to copy accounts directly from WHM using only the login Information of your client accounts. Even you can do that, if you need help contact your New host for help. It is very easy.

You need shell access to be able to use the transfer facility on WHM

I have shell access. But I can relate how do I use shell and WHM to transfer files, since one is in command prompt, another is browser base application Joshua

That is incorrect. All you need is root access and for that, just an email to you host asking them to do the transfer for you will be all that needs to be done. Assuming they are fine with doing it for you. Otherwise, the backup/restore method mentioned above is the way to go.

Root access? Jailed SSH cannot do this? The other method of back up and restore. One questions, do I have to go into the new host's WHM , create the account , login into that cpanel account, then go to restore full backup? Joshua

No, jailed SSH cannot do anything like this and yes, you need to create the account and login to that cPanel account to restore the backup.

Just a note on this if you are on a RedHat cPanel be sure you move to a similar operating system. We have seen some issues with restores from BSD -> RedHat and vice versa.

As others have mentioned, make sure that your new server is configured the same as your old one to make things easier. I would also add that you should plan on having both servers operational for a while. Move accounts individually if you don't have too many of them and start with the largest, most involved ones first. If a site uses a database, move the db to the new server and adjust the code on the old server to make db connections to the new server. This will keep the db "current" while DNS changes propagate so some posts, etc. don't get put into the old db just because the user connects to the old site.
