Roundcube & System Resources

Posted by Johnny Cache, 12-14-2010, 06:56 PM
Are there any other server admins out there that notice an increased system load as a result of the Roundcube mail program? Here's the situation; One of my clients (and their employees) prefer to use Roundcube because of the additional features. I figured it wouldn't be a problem having 7-10 users in the Roundcube environment. Two days later, my CPU load spiked and the server starts to choke a bit -- and it appeared to happen whenever Roundcube checked for new mail (every 5 minutes) which originally caused some frustration for the client. However, when they switched back to SquirrelMail there were no problems and emails sent instantly, whereas RoundCube could take up to 5 minutes to process and deliver an email. Are there reports of this webmail program causing resource overload? With a dual-quad core Xeon environment and 4gb RAM, I don't see why this is happening.

Did you track down the process which was causing the load?

Yes. The processes are owned by "cpanelroundcube" executing the 'php' command, according to the top output.

This is a known bug where the roundcube process gets stuck and keeps running consuming a lot of resources. You can manually kill the process, and update cpanel and roundcube, that should prevent this from reocurring.

Great info, thank you. By any chance do you happen to know of the URL that you got this info from? I would like to share it with my partner and our client that's experiencing the problem. I'd also like to find out if there's a planned fix in future releases.

We experienced this with an older version of RoundCube and HTML emails. It wasn't just any HTML email, but particular ones from like BestBuy, etc. Was rather unusual, but haven't experienced it since recent upgrades. (Make sure you have the latest version, eh.)
