Hi guys .. how may I host oracle data bases on my VPS .. would some body advise in details ? 11g version ...

You will more than likely need professional services, installing Oracle can be a PITA. Many changes are required (kernel parms etc) It will certainly function just fine on CentOS as well.

I'm not sure Oracle is going to preform well on a VPS, especially if it's going to be a busy database. It would be much happier on dedicated hardware. You should be able to find all kinds of info on Oracle's support site.

Oracle database consumes lot of resources and installing on VPS...not sure how well it will perform on a VPS. lot of tweaks in kernel and network parameters are required.

Actually, no network params, but yes some kernel params. OP, are you looking for Oracle Express Edition, Enterprise Edition, or...? Express Edition is limited to 1GB RAM, 1 CPU, 11GB datafiles (for the current 11g beta). For the 10g version, it's limited to 4GB datafiles. Oracle EE is unlimited, but of course I'm sure you put down your $40,000 per CPU for a license... I've run Oracle XE and EE on a VPS and it's worked fine - but as I recall it was a 2GB/4GB VPS and I was only using a 512MB SGA. It may have helped that I'm a professional Oracle DBA by trade I would read the Oracle install doc for Linux. You definitely want CentOS and you should install the 32-bit version unless you have >4GB of RAM. The doc is pretty step-by-step but unless you're familiar with basic Oracle concepts - archives, redo, SGA, TNS, etc. - it could be rough sledding. In that case, best to read the Oracle Concepts book first and then tackle an install. You actually don't need that monstrous of a box - it depends how hard you're going to be using the DB. For just a dev/test/learn database, I've run them in 1GB VMs on my desktop all the time, and the disk/CPU is not as powerful. One thing to note is that you'll need some kind of X server on your VPS unless you are confidant of writing a silent install response file, which is not how I'd start out as a beginner. Two excellent sources of info: oracle-base.com: lots of step-by-step howtos for installing Oracle. He focuses more on desktop VMware, Virtualbox, etc. but a lot of it would still be applicable.tahiti.oracle.com: the quick entry into all of Oracle's documentation

thanks raindog308 this is helpful thanks a ll I was thinking of cooking a openVZ template with oracle ... does that seems a nice cooking ?
