Memory Used 67%-80% Normal?

Posted by mtbl34c, 05-09-2005, 12:27 PM
I have been with hostgator for several months, compared with lunarge, hostgator server load is very high. This is the data during this morning Server Load 1.53 (4 cpus) Memory Used 70 % Swap 0.983 % Disk sda1 (/) 68 % Disk sda6 (/home) 61 % Disk sda5 (/tmp) 8 % Disk sda2 (/usr) 54 % Disk sda3 (/var) 88 % Last night, the memory used reached to 80% when I tried to upload 1.5M mysql data in phpmyadmin, it gives php timeout error This is the data from my another site in lunarpages: Server Load 0.60 (4 cpus) Memory Used 15.5 % Swap 0.998 % Disk sda2 (/) 34 % Disk sda1 (/boot) 11 % Disk sda8 (/home) 25 % Disk sda7 (/tmp) 3 % Disk sda6 (/usr) 61 % Disk sda5 (/var) 35 % From your guys experiences, what is your memory and server load range?

Posted by jNive, 05-09-2005, 12:31 PM
Your timeout is most likely caused my the CPU load combined with the fact that by default, the maximum execution time is usually limitted to 30 seconds, so if it isnt complete, its terminated. That Memory Used figure also includes the swap, as its a figure for Total memory, not physical ram, so all the ram is used most likely. The /var folder also seems a tad clogged,

thanks for reply the timeout is 300 seconds Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 300 seconds exceeded in /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin/libraries/read_dump.lib.php on line 91

sounds like their mysql database is being screwed a tad,

Posted by layer0, 05-09-2005, 05:23 PM
Doesn't seem too normal to me. Request to be moved to a different server and see if they allow it. Cheers

Upload it in ftp than open a ticket for it to be dumped. or check out hostgator.com/backup.html The load and memory usage you reported is perfectly fine for a dual xeon especially while your trying to restore a file of that size. Phpmyadmin / apache is not built for uploading databases around the few meg size due to restrictions cpanel / most hosts have set up.

Posted by layer0, 05-09-2005, 08:13 PM
Ahh.. That was the load while restoring the database. To the OP: This is not a good example for comparing a server's load to another. Cheers

Posted by mtbl34c, 05-09-2005, 08:19 PM
That is the load 10 minutes after I failed to upload the data. even now east time 08:18 pm erver Load 2.60 (4 cpus) Memory Used 47.9 % Swap 0.994 % Disk sda1 (/) 68 % Disk sda6 (/home) 62 % Disk sda5 (/tmp) 8 % Disk sda2 (/usr) 55 % Disk sda3 (/var) 90 % Anyway I figured out a way to upload data without troubling hostgator all the time

Posted by layer0, 05-09-2005, 08:23 PM
Considering it is a Dual Xeon the server can take much more load than that. But, it is a slight issue to be looked into if the load is sustained. Check it again at other times and figure out an average if you are concerned. Cheers

Just wondering, Did your site have any low perfromance? If it didn't have, how does the server load/ memory usage affects you? Gil.

update on this post eastern time 14:20 May 10 Server Load 1.23 (4 cpus) Memory Used 61.6 % Swap 0.989 % Disk sda1 (/) 68 % Disk sda6 (/home) 62 % Disk sda5 (/tmp) 8 % Disk sda2 (/usr) 55 % Disk sda3 (/var) 92 % I feel this server slow, although most of the time still acceptable. I only have experiences with hostgator and lunarpages, I can only compare these two hosting companies. My website on lunarpages is always faster than the one on hostgator. at the same time, my another site with lunarpages: Server Load 0.40 (4 cpus) Memory Used 15.5 % Swap 0.998 % Disk sda2 (/) 34 % Disk sda1 (/boot) 11 % Disk sda8 (/home) 26 % Disk sda7 (/tmp) 3 % Disk sda6 (/usr) 62 % Disk sda5 (/var) 36 % I am just curious what is your guys' server load and memory used. If the Memory Used 61.6 % is too high, I may change to another hosting company after the contract expires. If 60% is ok with most hosting companies, I will stay with hostgaor. Thanks Last edited by mtbl34c; 05-10-2005 at 02:29 PM.

That's just wrong, since this doesn't matter! If the server speed is good, then it shouldn't matter to you if the load is 10 or 0.1, and if the memory usage is 12% or 80%. Just my thoughts, Gil.

Posted by layer0, 05-10-2005, 04:08 PM
I would agree with Gil for this. It does not really matter what the load and memory usage is as long as you don't see any performance issues with your site. Does your site load fast? Also, the server with LunarPages could easily be a new box that is not full yet. Whereas, the HostGator server could be a filled box. Cheers

Posted by Maximiliam, 05-11-2005, 05:20 PM
Thats why you have a lot of new boxes,l so they don't get filled up that quickly

Posted by ldcdc, 05-11-2005, 06:32 PM
You mean so you can keep an eye on them while they're slowly filling and carefully decide when the "Server is filled" seal should be put on them?

You should read a bit more about Linux, memory usage and server loads. Besides, the stats you're posting seem to be OK. Linux tends to use and fill up physical memory available, just to improve performance. Since my english is not good enough, I'll better post some articles posted elsewhere: Regards,

Today this server becomes very very slow, it needs more than 10 seconds to load a page, and tooke me 3 minutes to log in cpanel when I finally opened the server status page, this is what I see imap failed Server Load 12.03 (4 cpus) Memory Used 94.5 % Swap 0.958 % Disk sda1 (/) 68 % Disk sda6 (/home) 62 % Disk sda5 (/tmp) 8 % Disk sda2 (/usr) 55 % Disk sda3 (/var) 90 % I have asked to move to another server, hope they will do it

94.5 ram is a problem however since you still have not responded to my PM I have no idea what your account is or what server you're on to look into it.

Posted by mtbl34c, 05-13-2005, 04:08 PM
I didn't receive your PM and Now it's very very slow again check your pm, I sent my account information to you every time when my website is slow, I found memory used is very high Now Memory Used 78.4 %

I would say hostgator's customer service is good, problem solved in 10 minutes, but I just hope they don't put too many websites on one server, or monitor the server all the time

Posted by chaloupe, 05-25-2005, 04:06 AM
Believe me the servers are monitored around the clock! I'm on a 'hostgator' server with approx. 1750 websites and I never felt it was slowing down a bit. Never had any problem with them and I use a resseller account. So no need for a seal on the server I'm on. With Dual Xeon, you can sleep! trust me! even if the ram is high. You don't have to check server settings every ten minutes! There's a guy doin' that for you to make sure those servers stays up and running. And sometimes not knowing what you are really doing give us all problems. Make sure you test your stuff before uploading it. Use your head and not your mouse to only click everywhere and upload huge ammount of stuff on servers for no reason. p.s. It's not the number of website on a server that will get it not running well..it's how U guys run your own website that affect us all.

Chaloupe, Well put! Over the past 10 years I would have to say that that's the #1 issue for a shared server environment.

Posted by chaloupe, 12-28-2005, 01:21 AM
Yes it is the #1 for us too with our hosting company.

Linux is built to utilize as much of the RAM as possible. What you've posted shouldn't be a cause for concern. If your server starts dipping heavily into the swap partition of your server, then you have a problem.

lol Chaloupe you woke up 7 months later?

Better late than never? Anyway, old thread -- so closed.
