Marketing help needed

Hi, we're just in the process of setting up a small reseller business for the UK market. Our packages are likely to range from 150mb/1gb - 1gb/6gb, with £4 and £11 respectively, so fairly low costs and low spec. What we really want to hear about are how people have (successfully) launched and marketed their businesses, preferably for the markets like ours will be aimed at. What methods worked best? So far our ideas are only search engine placements -not cheap but seems effective, advertising on WHT on the adverts forum, and using CJ, perhaps. Hope you get a chance to help us out Mike

Work for a high PageRank by posting links to your site from major sites.

thanks, any suggestions on major sites you'd recommend? and any tips on how to persuade them to give us a link?

PageRank means nothing. You need high quality links to gain positions in the SERPs. PR is just a number. The best method is to look for sites with many backlinks. You can have a site that has 20,000 backlinks being a PR7 and a site with 150 backlinks being a PR7. Thats why you need to look deeper than PR.

I would suggest you host one of these forums for free in exchange for placing your banner/add/link on thier site. ppc tends to be expensive, do look into some SEO for specific keywards.

I agree, sounds like a good plan with the forums

A few things. First, do a bit of market research to figure out who your best prospective clients are. Then figure out how to market to them. This is purely hypothetical but let's say you determined your best bets are web design firms in the UK with between 1-10 employees. You could then rent a direct mail list (snail mail not email), design an attractive postcard, and arrange to have it sent to the companies on your list. Do some research on other means of highly targeted marketing as well. There is always Google AdWords but it is a competitive space already for reseller hosting.

Active participation in web hosting community forums will also help boost public awareness of your company.

I think ANY major host will tell you that your local market is your BEST bet. How many businesses do you think you would talk to that have no idea of what a webhost is? How many have a webhost but never met their provider? Who would you prefer to host with.. somene you met.. or an unseen stranger?
