VPS or Reseller?

Posted by Rich DS, 04-20-2006, 10:48 AM
Which would you recommend to start out a small hosting company? Why? Positive/Negatives ? If i start out a small hosting company, and plan to get bigger, which would be more beneficial to me, to make the leap from reseller to dedicated, or from vps to dedicated. Which one would be an easier transition? Or would it be better to go from Reseller > VPS > Dedicated

If you are not familiar with server administration reseller is best for you. It's costa are minimal too. You can search the forum too. There are threads about it too I started with reseller then switch to VPS. And now i have 2 VPS and 2 reseller. May be near i buy a dedicated server.

If you're just starting I would go reseller. If I would even go VPS, it would be a large one. These days though, I think I would just skip the VPS stage and use multiple reseller accounts up to the point when consolidating to dedicated would make sense.

I've noticed most of the time, people make enough money to go from reselling to a budget dedicated (on average, some obviously make more), completely skipping the "almost" useless VPS stage.

I agree with the others. Typically you want to start as small as you can anyways. Even if you knew about server management and other things, you still would like to eliminate OH cost as much as possible. Thus, reseller would be best. You have to crawl before you walk, and walk before you run. Don't start out walking just yet. You will get there just takes some time. Good luck to you.

I would only get a VPS if you have a very active site and cant afford a dedicated server. Other than that a VPS is a waste of money and time.
