Migrating HELM accounts - possible??

Posted by ndxb, 12-14-2006, 03:28 PM
Hi, we are in a bit of a pickle. We are currently on Plesk but were looking to migrate our domains to Helm (reseller account). Now Ive been told that I should go in for a ded box (which I dont want/need at this point) otherwise I will have to manually copy all accounts over (create accounts on the ded box, create email accounts again etc.) from the reseller account to the ded box down the line. I am willing to do a manual move now since its from plesk to helm - but i really dont want to go through it again moving from a helm reseller to hem ded box. Is there any way to accomplish this? Plesk, does have a migration tool for plesk to plesk, which is good... But what about Helm? This might make or break the deal really. Any input much appreciated!

There is a Helm migration tool to restore hosting accounts between two dedicated box. I'm not sure if you can use it to migrate from reseller to dedicated server or not (possibly not)

I believe the only migration tool is for the other way around (helm to plesk). I would like to know why you are switching, just curious.

I am guessin he likes the built in billing / billing gateway. Thats probably the thing? That is one feature that blows plesk away. However never used plesk for windows.

Personally I don't like the idea of the Integrated billing/billing gateway, especially not now with Visa/MC breathing down everyones backs over PCI Compliance, among other things. But that is just my feelings on it.

Well, mostly because I found plesk to be very unstable, always crashing (windows), and the panel was VERY slow to load. Anyone else have these problems, or was it just the host Im with causing the problems? I heard helm is faster though and more stable?

This actually sounds like a host issue. Either not running 7.5+ of Plesk, or not keeping up on maintenance, or overloading the server, etc... Prior to 7.5 I could have agreed with you, but they finally started getting it right about then. I haven't messed with Helm in a while so I can't say anything about it's performance or stability. I do know that I manage two Windows servers (not ours) that have over 300 clients each on them without problems and the control panel runs fine. A lot of the issues that hosts see with Plesk aren't always the easiest to figure out and correct. The problem is that they continually try to fix it themselves or ignore it that contact SW-Soft or a Service company and have it fixed correctly. Since 7.5 the issues have become minimal and since 7.6 I haven't seen any real issues. And 8.1 is even better.

Hey, thanks for the fast reply So, seems that my host is likely the issue then. Also, we have a windows VPS, with virtuzzo and that also hangs a lot... that VPS has 384 MB RAM though, maybe thats too less? Ive heard that MS Virtual Server is better for windows plesk.. dont know how true that is though... I cant justify getting a ded box for plesk with MSSQL right now, so guess I will need to look for a reliable host then. Perhaps an idea would be to have a higher spec Windows VPS and connect to another host that offers SQL access (remotely)? Any suggestions would be welcome P.S. with plesk you can migrate from reseller to ded box or ded box to ded box automatically correct?

Virtuozzo IMHO is better for hosting due to the interface. 384MB is your bare minimum amount, you should really be at 512MB, especially if you are hosting sites. Yes, you can migrate from Plesk to Plesk fairly easily by just doing in control panel backups. You can also see if your provider might do a backup of just your client account and give it to you. As for using Remote MSSQL that would be an option. Your VPS provider may be able to help you with that.
