Trouble With Email - Need to Edit /etc/courier/imapd

Hi, I have been having issues with my email for a while. After trying lots of things I think I have narrowed it down to the fact i am hitting the max number of connections allowed per IP in : /etc/courier/imapd I found a post on how to edit the file, however whilst in the file my keyboard/pc frooze and i had restart. I tried to log back in but now I can not get access to the file to make the edits. I will describe what I am seeing : I log into putty as root user, then type "vi /etc/courier/imapd" i see this ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "/etc/courier/imapd" [New DIRECTORY] I am not to sure of exactly what i need to do at this point, If any one can advise I would be most gratefull, I am a complete newbie to this so "idiot guide" answers would be great! thank you, anthony Last edited by yubnub; 05-29-2012 at 07:55 AM.

Generally, if you have a file open in vi/vim and you have to power down without saving your changes the original file is saved and only the edits are lost. Can you try to run a located to see if you just opened a new file this time instead of the correct file? Run: find / -name FILENAME where FILENAME is the name of the file.

Hi Mike, Many thanks for your response. I have run the command you mention and it gives me the following response : /usr/bin/imapd /usr/share/logwatch/scripts/services/imapd /etc/courier-imap/imapd It would seem from this that the file that I was editing in /etc/courier/imapd no longer exists? - can i restore it or edit the values that I was trying to edit some other way? many thanks again, anthony

Do you have a control panel on your server? If so, what?

You may want to ask your host for a copy of that file or you can try the bootstrapper or cli package installer to see if the file will be replaced by updating using those options.
