What security vulnerabilities are addressed by VPN?

For starters all your packets are encrypted so no one can spy or see what you are doing. Works great for public wifi.

It's much easier to setup a corporate or private network with VPN... Running servers not publicly available such as file storage or intranet. Running it all in RFC1918 space allows you to give the VPN users access while not needing to configure specific firewall rules for each server and/or login pages. It also keeps a good security perimiter in this case, if you don't want to allow internal users or VPN users to get a default route and rather them use a proxy server, or transparent proxy server for whatever reason.
