register new domain for reseller account???

Hello all, I am getting ready to sign up for a reseller account with Host Gator. When I click Order Now, it asks me if I would like to register a new domain or use an existing domain... I already have a website that I use for my design firm so I chose use an existing domain and then it said next to that "I will update my nameservers only..." My question is... If I use my existing domain, is it going to erase what is on my site??? And why do I need to have a domain attached to my account? Would this domain be for my hosting site??? Thanks.

Good news Your website won't be erased You just submit information for Hostgator to create a new hosting account for the domain. The domain will be the reseller domain. You can choose not to host that domain with hostgator or you can transfer your website over after hosting is activated.

You only point your domain to Hostgator's servers by update your name servers. At first get backup of your web site. Then change the name servers of your domain. And move all of your data to new web space that provides by Hostgator.

When you register with hostgator or any companies for a website or a reseller account it will ask for domain name as reseller or website is created based on the domain name as it will be used to create the account with that domain name. You can then move your website to account created by hostgator. So you dont loose your website

Theoretically, you could buy 1000 hosting accounts at 1000 different hosts, each with the same domain name. How then does the Internet know which one to take visitors to? At your domain registrar, you enter either the nameservers (e.g. ns1.yourhostnamehere.com and ns2.yourhostnamehere.com) or the IP addresses of the server. You can then switch which version of your site you want to be "live" at any time. So, to move from one host to another, first create the account at the new host, upload all your files and make sure everything is working, then go to your domain registrar and enter the new info. Wait a few days or a week to make sure propagation has finished (the process of the Internet getting the updated address for your domain), and only then cancel the account at the old host.
