Looking for recommendations for shared reseller provider for LAMP application hosting

Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for a shared reseller hosting provider that caters to the needs of LAMP web application developers. I'm not going to be reselling hosting per se, I just need a place to host websites and web apps for myself and clients. Key features that I'm looking for include: * Linux * Server administration handled by provider * Ability to create many accounts / domains, and ample resources within them such as MySQL databases, subdomains, email accounts and forwarders * SSH access * PHP 5, running as Apache module * MySQL 5 * Good customer service and tech support * Preferably ability to access MySQL server remotely via hostname / IP address * Preferably opportunity to have additional Apache modules and PHP extensions enabled if necessary Please only provide a recommendation if you have personal experience using the provider for at least 1 year, at least in part for hosting custom LAMP web applications (e.g. not off the shelf stuff like WordPress). Thanks!

I have seen another thread from you in VPS forum. So may be you want to compare both VPS and reseller recommendations and then decide with which one you want to go. Here with resellers regarding the SSH you may get jailed shell access only. So make sure with the provider what they can provide and what are the conditions. Best of luck.

Most providers handle a LAMP stack without issue. Are you looking for cpanel? for clustered solutions? something else? php as an apache module may be a little more difficult to find - but, not impossible.. As for SSH access and custom compiles... you may be better off in a dedicated situation - but, if you are willing to compromise, you can probably find a good shared environment that can accommodate you until you can justify a dedicated environment

You'd better repost all specifications for your new web host in the FIND a HOST section. Good luck

That's exactly right. Good point. Jailed access would probably be ok. Mainly I want to be able to do things like use the MySQL command line client and commands like tar, gzip, wget, etc. Thanks! Well, I've started to have a variety of issues with my current shared reseller provider, so that's why I'm in the market for a new one. I'm probably going to have to look into cpanel vs. DirectAdmin. I used cpanel years ago and it was ok, and for several years now I've been using DirectAdmin and that's ok too. Before I choose a new provider I'll probably try to get some info on which would be best to go with at this point. Other than that I don't need anything too elaborate -- basically just what I outlined at the start of the thread. PHP as Apache module is one of the things I'd like to find, although if PHP 5.3 comes out and the user_ini settings work well it may be a different story. That's the thing, I can't really justify a dedicated environment right now. I'm not sure what compromises you're suggesting -- some things I can live without and some I can't. Would you say a VPS woudl be an intermediate step worth considering between shared resller and dedicated? Are you talking about the Request A Quote thing?

for your specific requirements (custom compiles, etc), then yes, I think a VPS is a perfect solution for you... typically I would not recommend a VPS for someone looking for a reseller hosting solution - however, it seems to be the best fit in this case... Hope this helps..
