Reseller or VPS - Something better than Hostgator? - OneClickSSL

Posted by OpenPotion, 01-13-2012, 12:44 PM
I currently have a reseller account with hostgator, but hate that the have particular things locked down. One in certain is the ability to install SSL certs... I have to generate a ticket via a form every time I want one installed for a client. Not only that but their rates for such are highly marked up. $50 for a $10 cert, $150 for a $70 cert... or $10 to have them install a cert for you. Does anyone have any experience with a reseller account that allows GlobalSign's OneClickSSL? Anyone used ResellerClub's new reseller hosting (their support seems less than stellar based on my queries thus far)? Anyone used BlueHost's new reseller service? They allow ssl installs from what they have told me, but limit the shared hosting accounts to 15 concurrent connections (hostgator to 23-26 connections). Not sure though, if that would be an issue for most accounts since my clients all use google apps for email. I currently use: Bandwidth/month: 72.63 Gig # of cPanels: 100 Storage Used: 40 Gig Storage Allocated: 143 Gig Hostgator Fee: $75/month (160gig storage / 1200 gig bandwidth) Most of my clients use barely any of their space... and a few use more than I normally allocate, so the ability to oversell would probably help me lower my prices, which hostgator does not allow. Software: Most sites run Joomla, the rest wordpress. I am looking for a service with great support, which hostgator has had. I am also curious if I should switch to a VPS? If so who are the best VPS providers? I tried switching to a VPS at hostgator and all of my sites suffered greatly being moved to a server with half the processing power and stronger limits... so I switched back to a reseller account. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or recommendations in my quest for a better hosting solution for my clients. Thanks team! Jason

I'd definitely stick to reseller if there's nothing wrong with it currently. However if you want to save some operations cost or expand into other services not offered on the reseller account, a VPS will give you full control to do so Be sure to do your research, find a managed and flexible solution for VPS Best of luck

A cloud VPS or more premium VPS set-up could be a solution to consider if you want more freedom over your setup. But then you have to consider whether you can manage your own server or trust some one else to manage it for you. If reseller hosting is working for you and you can find a new provider you can trust then you may want to stick with that setup. As long as your reseller account has IPs allocated to it you would be able to install your SSL certs your self with many hosts. I would also imagine many hosts wouldn't charge for installing an SSL cert. Best of luck

It doesn't seem like you need anything larger then a reseller although, perhaps you want to have the scalability to grow with a VPS.

Look for something that is indeed scalable and provide you total managed on your VPS will be an added advantage.

If you look at a quality vps with one control panel, for your daily operation you should notnotice any difference. Good luck!

Knownhost has been amazing... I've given them a ton of tasks already and they just do it all!

You could get a better spec VPS with CloudLinux for a little cheaper than $70.

Yeah... specs are not my primary concern. Uptime and Support and a proven track record are worth way more to me than having free vps with better specs. Cheers.

You have a reseller account that is locked down? You can have root access with a VPS. You want more resources? You can use more resources with a VPS than you can with a reseller account, with the right provider you can anyway. You want SSL installed for free? If VPS is managed the provider will install it for free. Want to install the SSL yourself? You can with a VPS. It sounds like you need a VPS. But hey, use a reseller account if you want. Totally upto you.
