Backup a Reseller Account (WHM)

Posted by Several Companies, 03-04-2012, 03:01 AM
So, when I read the WHM(cPanel) documentation, there seems that there is suppose to be a 'backup' option. However in a reseller account I have, the option is missing in WHM (and maybe it is not suppose to be there). I can backup each client from within cPanel with no problem, but I would like to make my own backup of my entire 'reseller' account including all the packages / themes / feature lists / etc... It is possible I could contact the provider and pay them to back it up for me, but I would like to have a self-serve option that I can do automatically or when I make large changes. Ideas?

You are using Dedi box, VPS or a Reseller Account?

LOL. Seems I forgot to put that in the text (although in my defense, I did title the thread "Backup a Reseller Account"). It is a Reseller Account.

If you are a reseller, Backup option is not available for reseller accounts. If you are using a reseller accounts, so most of the large companies are offering to their customers free daily backups + site restore. Like hostgator, Eleven2, site5, stablehost etc. So your Reseller Provider is providing daily backups? If yes, then no need to backup your accounts separately. it is your providers responsibility. But Truly, we always suggest everyone to do their own backups. So you should contact to backup service provider companies like whmbackup etc

I have use a script similar to whmeasybackup before which was call whmbackup(ran out of business) & it did the job perfectly. Just that there will be a high load on the server while the script is generating the backup. I haven't use whmeasybackup before so I don't know but then Im sure it should do the job perfectly as well.

I would think that this would not be necessary. Maybe someone could help me understand in what situation this would be needed? The only time you would ever want to restore the reseller features etc would be if the server crashed completely and that's the hosts responsibility to resolve from their backups. Once the server is back up, you just have to restore all your clients from your own backups and usually the host will do that for you if you provide them with the backups or they will use their own backups they have.

We backup all of our clients cpanel accounts daily. I don't want to ever be in the position of losing their data for whatever reason, however unlikely. I choose to take that responsibility instead of leaving it all to my host. The world is an unpredictable place.

We arent talking about client cpanel accounts. we are talking about the reseller WHM account. restoring the features, packages etc.I also mentioned

Most reseller settings are saved automatically in the full backup file of the WHM Owner.

In case the server crashes and the host decides to 'cut their losses' and disappears... No Host, No Restore.

If you are currently hosting with a COMPANY (a genuine company), I don't think so he can disappear after a server crash

In the VERY rare case that this happens then I suppose that this would be needed but then you were with the wrong host in the first place I guess. But as FiberLightning mentioned,

You can try whmeasybackup. Working perfectly for our few resellers.

It's always a good idea to have your own backups, no matter what type of account you're running. No host, whatever they claim in their marketing, makes themselves responsible for the loss of data. And yes, hosts tend to disappear for whatever reason...

I use it myself. The script seriously rocks! There are a few things that I think it can improve on like creating subdirectories per date and also including a retention policy like deleting old backups after a particular number of days but other than that this scripts gives me serious peace of mind that I have my backups done. FiberLightning is the developer on the script. PM him and he will be able to guide you through it . As he mentioned, a lot of these settings that you refer to are already stored in the backup of your main account.I've never heard of this happening ubt I will take your word on it.

No need for that, just keep your eyes open. There are probably more fly-by-night operations in this industry than others that exist for more than a couple of years.
