How to setup temp backup mail server

Current hostingzoom reseller account is having email problems. every now and then the email works for 2 hours then it asks for pasword in outlook, then it works again. this is over all my account in this server and all my clients experience this. This use to happen only once in 3 months or so now its happening 4 - 5 times a day... since old type co.za domains take almost 2 days to get transfered. I want to use another server to handle email. If i change the mx records as 0 newservername.com 10 currentservername.com will it just act as a backup server or will mail cliets fetch the email there as well provided that the accounts is set5 up there?

Hi, It depend on your mail server, If it's Exim, you could set many MX for mail and the new one will be backup, but I think the other mail server just could set One MX as receiver.

ResellerZoom said they have changed the mail. What ever that means. probably between Courier <-> Dovecot or what ever. To prevent this in future I thought I will setup a DNS manager elseware with failover. if mail server or webserver does not work it will chanalso has the backup mx records and primary mx record of the main server for if the new server comes online mail wil be routed back. It will not take the errors away but at least limit them from x hours downtime to only sy 5 mins depending on how often I check and DNS propagation... Will this work?

You couldn't do that with Reseller, If you had detective or virtual server you will be able to make chain.

0 newservername.com 10 currentservername.com Lower number means high priority. In above example, if newservername.com mail server goes down then it will start routing emails using backup MX record currentservername.com. As soon as the first MX record will become online, emails will start routing using it again.
