Need advice for managed hosting !

Posted by kreati, 02-06-2006, 11:32 AM
Hi ! I'm new to the whole web hosting business and have no strong knowledge of server management .so I'm thinking of having a managed server were I can host my e-commerce site and then sell off the remaining bandwidth. Now my question is : IS it possible to have a managed server and be a hosting provider ? how can I do this if I don't have root access ? thank you for your advices .

That really comes down to the level of management you're paying for. Usually though, you will get a control panel of some sort with your server that allows you to perform basic tasks easily without bothering your host.

does it mean that with the cPanel alone I can do my webhosting tasks without worrying ?

I think the best way for you is to get a reseller plan , you get Cpanel and WHM where you can sell what you dont use , if you want more details please contact us. Better to learn how its done before going with your own server

As hosting4u said in the previous post, I believe that a reseller account would be your best bet. At some sites I've seen you get free hosting space and bandwidth for your main account (your ecommerce business) and can sell remaining disk space and bandwidth to others. Most companies handle most, if not all, of the support issues related to accounts. You would just have to learn how to set up accounts in Plesk, cPanel, etc. If you have any other questions or would like some suggested companies let me know! At this point I wouldn't suggest managing a dedicated server as that is a little complicated at the beginning. << signatures are to be set up in profiles >> Last edited by writespeak; 03-01-2006 at 03:49 PM.

It's possible but you should definately know the basics. Try ServerWizards or PlatinumServerManagement. They offer very reasonable pricing in order to manage servers! cPanel is your control panel basically. You do need a server setup and regular security updates in order to provide quality web hosting and management. Good luck! God Bless!

You will have full root access when you purchase a dedicated server. A managed server usualy is a dedicated server, with an added support contract ontop of that where the datacenter staff (or someone you hire 3rd party) will help you run things ranging from keeping it secure/safe and monitoring logs to helping answer your customer's questions about how to retrieve their email. Managed is the most abused word in the hosting industry, so be sure you know what is included vs not (for intsance SOME places sell managed servers where you DO NOT get root access, just so you cant screw it up by making a mistake and have to waste time going through them exlusively for everything, not a good idea!]. Anyway its perfectly normal to get a dedicated box, managed service contract AND be a full blown hosting provider on your own. You handle your niche products and sales/support, and the managed support team handle the heavy lifting like major software updates and security monitoring. Just ask around and check the offers section on here to find something that fits your needs.

Depending on how many accounts/domains your likely to sell and your budget, i'd be inclined to also suggest a reseller package to you before renting a dedicated server. Although some dedicated servers do come with a very good control panel that allows you to add hosting accounts and domain names just as easily as reseller packages do. It would depend on how many accounts and how you want to offer your hosting packages. If you website is pretty resource intensive however, it may be worth you looking to get a dedicated server, putting your own website on it, and then sell off the rest of the space/resources/bandwidth on that server to your own customers - Do you have some ready to sign up? Agreeing with turnkeycolocation, do be careful with what a management contract does actually include! << snip >> Best of Luck. Last edited by writespeak; 03-01-2006 at 03:36 PM.
