Help me with those Managed Servers

Posted by barca4ever, 03-25-2006, 06:31 PM
Hi there, Please help me to choose the best of the the following Managed dedicated Servers. Note that I spent a whole week narrowing down the options, and I'm trying to go for the cheapest server as much as possible. Moreover, Rate the hosting company itself if you heared anything about them: sectorlink.com AMD 64 Sempron 3000 - 1024MB - 80GB - 750GB Bandwidth - 100Mbps ($80) webhostplus.com AMD Athalon XP 2800 - 1024MB - 80GB - Unlimited Bandwidth - 10Mbps ($100) hostinganddesigns.com AMD Barton 64 3000 - 1024MB - 80GB - Unlimited Bandwidth - 10Mbps ($90) dedicatedplace.com AMD Barton 3000 - 1024MB - 80GB - 1000GB Bandwidth - 10Mbps ($90) servstra.com AMD Barton 3000 - 1024MB - 80GB - 1000GB Bandwidth - 10Mbps ($90) If someone can explain in breif if I need the port's speed to be 100Mbps or 10Mbps is enough for me to have a large bugy forum (+13K users) with some files (~5MB) to be downloaded And do I need the processor to be 64bit?

Where did you get that price from servstra.com? I just got a quote from them and it was more $.

Personally the sectorlink.com deal looks good to me. A) it's cheapest B) 1024MB should be plenty C) Space shouldn't be an issue D) 100Mbps port You might need more bandwidth but I very much doubt it and I'm sure they'd add it on for you for a small extra. Just my $0.02 Liam

Sorry brithostnetwork, I was mistaken! Its 512MB Grand Pooh-Bah, you can find the price I mentioned at servstra.com/servers/amdlow.html Please guys, I want more advices with explainations

I have read some good things regarding Servstra except one time I read that support has gotten a little slow however I have had no direct experience with them. I did just inquire with my current hosting company regarding a configuration that you desire just to see what they can offer and it was pretty decent in terms of pricing. thenynoc.com Pentium 4 2.4Ghz - 1024MB - 80GB - 1000GB Bandwidth - 100Mbps ($95) Hope things go well in your search.

THill, thank you for your input I surfed thenynoc.com and I didn't find the link to order the server with the specs you mentioned! I apreciate your help, and asking all the experties to help me ASAP Why no one shares his knoledge about my last questions regarding (64bit - MBps) !?

Posted by THill, 03-26-2006, 11:03 AM
You should not need the OS to be 64 bit unless your applications specifically require it. That price and configuration was a custom quote so you would need to contact them directly to order either through email (the fastest reponse) or phone. They will take care of you from there. My knowledge of the port question (10 or 100mbps) is limited so I cannot help you there. Sorry.

Posted by barca4ever, 03-26-2006, 02:13 PM
rumi, thanks for passing by, but as I said, I was mistaken! Its NOT 1024MB, its 512MB

I'm still looking for help

How much you need to add if you want 1024MB? If it comes around $90 still go for that.

can any one explain more when do I need 64bit processor and when do I need 100Mbps or just 10Mbps and when do I need 1GB RAM or just 512MB RAM, since I don't want to waste more money if I don't need them?

Go With The SectorLink!

Posted by Seaniboy, 04-03-2006, 06:06 AM
The price from servstra.com would be unmanaged though as that price does not include a control panel

Posted by Grand Pooh-Bah, 04-03-2006, 10:10 AM
Servstra is a managed server!

Posted by next-hop, 04-03-2006, 10:34 AM
What he is saying is that if the buyer does not get a control panel, then servstra will not manage the server. Taken directly from their website: "Server management services do not apply to servers not running either Plesk, Cpanel or DirectAdmin. "

You really expect a decent managed solution for < $100 a month?? What is the world coming to ...

Posted by layer0, 04-03-2006, 05:13 PM
That translates to "I'm trying to ruin my business as much as possible". Do some research, actually pay (< $100/mo managed server is considered A STEAL) for the services you receive. They don't do any security tweaks by default though, how can you call that managed? I agree, this is very sad, but it was bound to happen sometime. Oh and if you choose to get serious, check out: www.rackspace.com www.vericenter.com Last edited by layer0; 04-03-2006 at 05:16 PM.

What kind a tweaks? because I joined sectorlink and I'll feed you back about my experience with them

I'm not really confident that you would get any management for those costs. Skilled and reliable employees cost an arm and a leg. The fact that many of these companies require a control panel hints at very basic if any server administration skillsets among the ranks. Now I am aware that some tasks can be automated by inhouse scripts anything complicated is probably out of the question. Mask this with the low cost when somone who pays for a high education and goes through REAL certification programs will demand a hefty hourly fee.

Hi barca4ever, Don't got to webhostplus, The bad Company i fount it. i had a dedicated there, surely they have a Good network, but Support Guys like so much money. one day they "temself" brok the httpd.conf "Apache" of my server, 5 days all sites were no working. they recommanded money for the repair, "they did the problem and they needed money too" so baaaaad if you need cheapest, you'll still yourself cheap. try with those great companies: www.Rackspace.com www.inetu.com they are the truly companies in the earth i know. Reguards
