Which is the most............

Posted by Pulp Fiction, 12-20-2006, 02:20 PM
Hello fellow webhosting users, I'm looking to get a dedicated server for myself in mid-jan, or early Feb latest which will need Root Access due to the 3rd party software I'll be installing on it. I don't have a clue how to do anything with regards to all I'll be doing, but will be paying different people for different services as I go along to make a website for a personal project of mine. Obviously this is not always the way I'll go because I'll learn myself in time to take care of certains things that need to be done. Anyway back to the subject and question(s). I've read about seeksadmin and serverwizard, which one is the best suited for me? I'm a novice so would like to know what services I would need to keep it safe and secure? I'll be purchasing 1and1's root server package which offers: * Free FTP backup space – 250 GB * AMD Opteron 175 (2 GHz Dual Core) * 4,096 MB DDR RAM * 2 x 250 GB hard drive (hardware RAID1) * Fedora Core has 100mbit data transfer for £269.08 PER MONTH including VAT. So what would I need? and also is there anyway I can cut down unneccessary prices and do it myself? All advice and comments would be gladly recieved, thanks.

Can anyone who is from 'SeeksAdmin' answer me as this is the one that looks by far the best so far with their costs and reviews. Am I right in thinkin, I would need to purchase the 'monthly admin plan' and the 'active security'. Or could I do the monthly admin myself via the plesk 8 I will be provided with. Thanks for any input that may be provided, whether it's seekadmin, serverwizard or just another helping soul of this forum.

Hi Pulp Fiction, I can say that SeeksAdmin are a very competent management company having used them for the past few months. All tickets (sales and support tickets) are answered within a couple of minutes and problems are usually solved within half an hour at the most with a complete breakdown of the problem and how it was solved. They keep you updated throughout. I can highly recommend them and since you need 'proactive' management, I believe ServerWizards do not offer this as part of their service. For example, if you need kernel upgrades, you have to request it whereas SeeksAdmin have an option for proactive management where they will do all the necessary if and when it needs doing (I believe SeeksAdmin had a special a month or so ago where this cost just $50 which is a bargain). Two thumbs up (three if I had them) for SeeksAdmin. Cheers - Dav

Thank you Dav. And what is the most "proactive managing" between platinumservermanagement.com, seeksadmin.com, touchsupport.com and got-management.com?

Thanks for that info dave, will look into them sometime when nearer the time as I can't see a email address for pre-sale questions. Also it's a while off before I will require their services

For what 1and1 offer, to get it for a special offer on the section on the main page it's more or less nearly triple the cost. £280.08 per month or something for 1and1 £717 or there abouts + £20 set up cost which to me is not affordable. people may get good value for money on the lower packages and mbit lines and limits. But it's simply impossible for me to use due to the high ammount of power and resources particular 3rd party programs will need in order to sustain a smooth running. Cheers for your suggestions though

Can anyone else suggest anything of same spec or better thn the one previously stated! My budget is £300 a month and must be UK based. Please state OS, what tools come with it etc (novice so can't go to in depth) monthly b/w and mbit, would like 100mbit unmetred, bit if can give a good commited line then good. and how much etc. "Thanks in advance and sorry if this seems a little to vague and less informative" PS- does any place offer root access as well as been fully managed as good as seeksadmin for example (going off the reviews). The reason I need root access is for 3rd party software to be installed which will need a lot of system resources to keep it going smooth and you have to change file permissions etc as well in order to achive this. I don't pretend to know about all this but will learn as I go along, of course I'll be using someone else to do all this for me. But it'll be good to learn as I go in order to rduce the prices.

Update! Seems I've been searchingfor reviews about 1and1 all over the place, I can safely say no matter how attractive the offers look I'll not be using them I think when the time comes. Also it seems that US are as good, but was worried about using US providers due to not being listed in UK google etc because that is my market. This is a more of a personal project/hobby and if it expands will become more commercial etc. Like said before, I require a good system spec with about 250gb raid 1 with 4gb Ram as well as 100mb unmetred (if im right? i dont want it shared altho all thinhs are shared on some length) looked so far at 800hosting.com Anymore suggestions? don't matter if you are a customer of a provider promoted your own service. PS-hope to have some replies on this subject

It matters what OS you want, and the bandwidth you're asking for may be a little extreme - a full 100mb just for you will cost you a lot. It might help if we knew more about the application you'll be hosting (feel free to PM me if you want my advice yet kept private), and have alook at the colo forum for more information on bandwidth discussions. US providers are fine, but the latency increases (ie the ping times, which usually make no difference), but the cost of international bandwidth is greater than national, so a UK host would make more sense for you.

I have had servers in the UK and the US at the same time, and I have not found much differences apart from costs and taxes. Using an US hosting company might save you some pounds! It all depens on what you want do do with the server. If you are okay with the States, try servermatrix.com (they are theplanet.com but a little bit cheaper) I have had no problems with them for 3 years.
