Migration Question

Posted by mark81, 05-20-2013, 05:51 AM
Hi, I am looking at changing hosts for my cpanel reseller due to lots of problems with my current host. A few hosts I am looking at offer free 'cpanel account migration'. Sorry to sound dumb but I wanted to know if this migration will transfer the entire website also? I have a few wordpress sites with specific plugins etc and don't want to have to set these up again. I wanted to know if all files and emails will be transferred over, so there will be little downtime (apart from the dns change). Mark

Hi, In a cPanel to cPanel migration, yes, everything migrates without a problem. This includes emails, email addresses, forwarders, homedirectories, MySQL databases, and cron jobs. So if you have WordPress installed at one domain, it will move seamlessly. Lots of hosts offer free cPanel account migrations.

Quick one before I go to a meeting... you've answered your own question! If the new host will move the accounts for you then as you say, it is just updating the dns details. You'll need to provide them with your existing reseller account user/pass, but it should be a fairly painless exercise. You may want to check the number of accounts that the new host will transfer, some set limits of 25 or so.

A direct cPanel to cPanel migration will transfer all your files, settings, DNS Zones and everything. A few things to note is that the PHP/MySQL Versions both the hosts use. After that it is just a matter of updating your Nameserver IPs.

cPanel to cPanel migration will transfer your entire website contents to new server. However, it may be possible that some settings of MySQL, PHP may be different at new hosting provider server. so you should first verify the settings like PHP modules, MySQL settings of old hosting provider with new hosting provider to avoid any unnecessary issues.

Web Host Manager doesn't allow creating backup of all resold accounts as one file on Reseller Hosting. So you will need creating full backup of each resold account on their cPanels and migrating them separately to your new Hosting. If you have not many resold accounts when your new hosting provider may do it for you. And if you have your own private name servers when downtime will doesn't take many time. But if it have not when this can be a problem for you. Then you need contact your customers about changing their domain name servers.

Hit the nail on the head with this one! You have to be aware of the MySQL and PHP version differences, as well as plugins and extensions that may or may not be enabled on the two different hosts. For instance, you may require IonCube and it is not available on your new host - in which case your site will break. In general, everything will be fine. Your new company should be able to tell you if your site is going to work on their servers or not prior to transfer or even purchase.

Most hosts provide cpanel hosting with Mysql 5.x, PHP 5.3 and Ioncube. The OP should contact potential host to confirm before making the switch

A cpanel to cpanel migration will be pretty painless. There should be no down time.

The MySQL version is generally the only potential hangup with a cPanel to cPanel move. Going from version 5.0 to 5.1 or 5.5 will generally work without issue, however going from 5.5 to 5.0 often results in blank databases (even though the restore will appear successful).

It will transfer everything like emails, files, dns, basically every setting in your control panel that was modified. Also, most hosts do offer free migration because its done through WHM. Some highlight it more than others. Doesn't hurt to ask them Goodluck with your host move! You should download a backup of your files just in case. You can do this in cPanel (Backup Wizard) - Just to be in on the safe side

Mark81 : Cpanel to cpanel migration will transfer all content including plugins/images/.htacces files/emails/etc from your current host to new host .You only need to change dns from registrar end and wait for new dns update .

Should work fine. You can do it yourself as well. I've had to do it a few times for Mybb and Wordpress based sites. You just upload the database and files, then you update the configuration file.

As others have said, it's important to do some preliminary checks on software versions, PHP handler etc. Every sensible provider will do that first and it saves you headache over doing it yourself and running into trouble.
