Looking for a Reseller Hosting similar INNOHOST.com

I've been with InnoHost for almost a decade now, I believe.. but lately they have gotten a bit too strict on the settings, and I'm sure it's for a good purpose.. but I believe that server security must not get in the way of productivity too much.. and that real security should even be a seamless experience... I have all respect for the great guys at InnoHost.. their servers, their performance, and specially their LIVE SUPPORT that has never been offline in my experience! However over the last few months, (and a recent "experience") can't help but feel the harshness of its security and policies...I know it's for the good of the customers, but it has become quite an inconvenience. While I am still trying to work out a way to stay, it doesn't look promising. So I would like to start scouting for a host similar to them in reputation and customer support, but has the following qualities: 1) REMOTE MYSQL capabilities - this is built into the CPANEL and is a standard feature that should be available, but they have blocked this feature. 2) A better way of handling Suspicious traffic Their firewall are blocking so many legit IP addresses / traffic .. I keep experiencing this myself every week almost.. and I am hearing complaints from my customers and website users about not being able to access websites hosted on their Servers (Lost of sales occurring as well).. I'm sure these guys meant well but something's terribly inefficient w/ the settings. And PLUS, most users are now on shared IP addresses, and that is just making things worst. I would like to make it clear that I am in no way complaining against InnoHost, in fact I love those guys.. they've been really swell.. and that these are not PROBLEMS but more like a PREFERENCE issue that I share with some other webhosters/developers. I hate it when I have to transfer, but sometimes one must.. from several hosters, to SOLID INTERNET, to INNOHOST, WHT has always been a community to lean on.. I've been gone for a while , but I hope the WHT community is able to help me - ONCE MORE. Hello to all. Tea J

What they are doing is very good. Better secure than sorry. If you want to control the mysql setting and firewall, go for vps.

thanks for the input. They did offer my VPS..but it's too expensive for me at the moment. i'm actually just a Developer hosting my own projects/websites for clients (I technically do not sell/resell hosting publicly) and sometimes i bundle free hosting w/ my projects, etc.. and second, i don't want to bother w/ managing my own server.. i need someone else to do it for me so i can focus on what i do best.. As per being secure.. well yeh, I do agree about it being secure.. but i believe there is a way to conduct security that doesnt hinder efficiency and reliability.. let's get real, there isnt such a thing as ZERO RISK. we all have to take risks.. if we're just talking about safety and disregard everything else such as convenience and reliability, i can argue that WHITELIST ONLY ACCESS type setting is the BEST for SECURITY. but what type of service would that mean.. similar to my case.. when my customers and users start to complain not being able to access the website, it's a terrible inconvenience.. 1 or 2 reports from time to time is ok.. but if im getting it 1 or more a week from LEGIT users.. then there's something wrong.. what's next? block of a whole country from which this IP came from? better safe than sorry right? so no i do not believe that things are as simple as this. Same goes w/ remote mysql.. it's such a remarkable tool for developers (and most developers don't even know/use this) .. and blocking it off totally makes me work more hours and more lines of code etc.. im sure there's a line somewhere that gives both benefit of security w/ enough risks to offer efficiency/reliability and I really hope to find one.... *sigh*

The remote MySQL feature is disable on most providers it would be difficult to find one that offers it. The blocking issue looks like the the firewall just acting up or mod_sec which can be notorious at times. I too would say that a VPS is the route to go if you want ultimate flexibility and control.

Hi Tea, I would recommend using a VPS. If you are not comfortable managing your own VPS, consider using a Managed VPS. I am using StormOnDemand for my website would recommend you to use them. You can easily set your own network firewall rules, amongst many other features you would use. All the best with your growing business.

Thanks Kushal. Yes I did find this out recently... Out of several hosts i've contacted there's only 2 that offers this...although not openly, but by request... (not IP whitelisting, more like account based approval or something) Thanks for your recommendation, I will definitely check them out.. I would love a Managed VPS.. but the cost for my little projects is just too high. i basically just want the STANDARD SETTINGS on a VPS mimicking shared/reseller settings hosting companies do, but at least allow me the remote mysql freely.. and perhaps relaxing the ip rules as it is blocking tons of good traffic.. i dont need anything else from a vps.. so it's a hard bargain.

I rarely see it blocked, it opens up to specific hosts/ip(s) which should not really be a problem, depending on what the user is doing. Most use it to edit the database from home or shops etc, if it was open to any host then there would be some serious problems. Shop around, just ask the questions first and do the usual review checks. As for the blocks, sounds like the firewall, it happens to much if not modified to touch a good setup without this happening, but it generally blocks tons of legitimate users.
