Looking for WEBMAIL solution

Posted by JKCZ, 09-07-2009, 01:40 AM
Hi, I'm looking for a webmail solution. Basically - I want to be able to offer 50/100/250/500/1000/2500 (start with 50 and potential to grow over years to 2500+) mailboxes to anyone that registers. Each mailbox should have 100MB of space. This is for a town over seas that I would like to offer individuals living in the town their own mailbox. Should support CZ language. I'm looking for: A) solution - something I can purchase ready to go and just add to my website B) is there a app out there that is good enough that I can just purchase licenses for and install on a dedicated server myself? (need something available in EN but CZ user client menus..etc. Appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

It depends on what you are searching for, if you want to offer a little more than just webmail for example an service which also offer calendar service and addressbook synchronization then you might be interested in bongo-project.org

Check out zimbra.com. Very nice, a bit heavy on resources though.

Interesting - Thank you Mike. How do you like it? How many mailboxes? Are you using their app or are you using their managed services? - I noticed that they are only licensing 25users - I wonder if it will scale for 2500+ users. Is there a new account form available that auto adds and registers users and resets passwords ..etc.etc? Thank you.

It works great, check out their pricing section for your location. We're running the application on a dedicated box. Also they do have an API for doing various things within the system. If you have a paid license with them, they will gladly help you find the functionality you are seeking so you can have a programmer integrate it with some type of web portal for your clients. http://www.icewarp.com/support/search.php?query=api Default pricing scale: Users: 25 50 100 200 500 1000 2000 5000 Unlimited

You have to choose the number of users on the dropdown box. Try www.icewarp.cz that is your local distributor. I'd suggest that IceWarp is a Czech product, so maybe it's the best language support you can have? ;-) Yes, it allows for self/auto-registration and I have implemented it on 15k and 40k accounts installations here in Brazil.

Did you write a custom API integration for it, or did you have a developer/programmer/company do it?

I mean I have implemented IceWarp itself (as I do consulting work and training sessions for IceWarp Brazil and their customers - yes, very suspicious to talk well about the product :-) ), not the auto-registration. Auto-registration (auto-signup) is already embedded into the webmail interface, there is no need for API integration or custom programming unless desired.

I was curious, as for automated billing purposes would be great

What server specs would you recommend to scale up to 1500 user accounts? What did you use for your 15K 40K account implementation? The auto-registration & password reset features that are already included - I'm assuming you can brand it with your own LOGO / Content ? Also - I'm wondering if the admin GUI can be in different language than the user interface? If I start with 50Mb per mailbox and want to offer 500Mb + for extra fee - anything build in to this app that can support this? Great help so far - much appreciate it all.

5k accounts: the implementation was a semi-hot-failover using Linux with DRDB and heartbeat. The machines were identical, Phenom X4 with 8GB RAM and CentOS 5.3 x64, in a RAID5 environment. 15K accounts: the implementation was a cold-failover system based (one frontend that can switch to another but not automatically) Dell 1950 Dual Xeon E5310, 4GB RAM, with a Dell MD1000 attached for the storage. Accounts were stored in a separate non-dedicated MS SQL Server. 40k accounts: the implementation was a load-balanced system (using Windows 2003 Enterprise NLB, a software based solution instead of a hardware LB), composed of 3x Dual Xeon 3.0 HT frontends, 2GB RAM, 36GB SCSI; attached to a backend SQL and file server (same specs) running MS SQL 2000 and, attached to it, an IBM DAS (previously it was a JBOD RAID5, but when the project expanded to enable the major part of the accounts, the storage was switched to the DAS). Password reset is on the webmail login screen. It can send the password to the alternate email address on file on the database. Auto-reg: webmail changed recently, I'd have to get more info on the autosubscription customization but yes, the webmail code is in PHP so you can deal with it. Logo can already be personalized for the webmail. Admin GUI is only for global and/or domain-level administrators (no individual mailbox administration), yes, it can be in another language and you can remove options you don't want these admins to see or change.
