Any OnAPP users doing windows vps's?

If you are was wondering what backup programs you have had success with doing daily backups with. We are using Backup Exec 2010 but having a problem with very slow speeds (3-5 MB/min). Have not been able to figure out whats causing it. Hyper-V windows vps's work fine with BE 2010. Was wodering if anyone else has run into this (and solved it) or if they found a better solution for daily backups then Backup Exec. Thanks!

What PV drivers are you using? Does OnApp include PV drivers?

Do you have the XEN windows drivers installed? Francisco

My guess is that you will need the GPLPV drivers installed since they use Open Source Xen. On a side note, my experience with GPLPV a couple years ago was a nightmare, hopefully they have worked out the bugs. It's the main reason we went with XenServer.

How can I tell? Onapp never mentioned having to install windows drivers. Windows vps's seems to work OK, just this one issue with BE 2010. Thanks! Update: Just found this on their website: "OnApp uses GPL Paravirtualization drivers, which provide front-end drivers for the Xen block and network devices. This gives Windows much higher disk and network performance. "

OnApp does use the PV drivers to improve speed, so the techs need to look at your setup in detail to check if something else is at fault Last edited by CRego3D; 12-07-2010 at 06:25 PM.

yup - submit a ticket to our techs. They are there 24/7 to help out and would be happy to take a look. D

They are scratching their heads as well. Was hoping to see if any else out there was doing windows vps's and to see what they were using. Thanks!

Where are you backing up to with this BE2010? Is it to another partition on the same mount, another storage medium? I am not sure the setup, but there must be a bottleneck somewhere. If you were to raw copy from the source to the dest is it also just 3-5MB/s or is it more in the realm of 90MB+/s? I don't have experience with onApp so I am asking more general how you could possibly troubleshoot where the issue lies.

Been there, done that. Talk to James W. He has been working with me on this issue extensively and he is great. This was just a query to see if any other onAPP customers have run into this and if they found a better solution. Coming from a windows hyper-v windows environment and this last little issue with Backup Exec has become a thorn in my side. Onapp vm images backups are great, but we need some file by file restore capability occasionally and Backup Exec has been our favorite for over 6 years for daily backups. Thanks!

Stephen, Thanks for some suggestions to try. We are using a windows 2008 server that is our backup server for our hyper-v and onapp vm's. No problem with Backup Exec Linux agent backing up linux vm's, just the windows agent. All machines are on the same subnet and have ping times less then 1 ms. My biggest goal for posting here was to see if anyone else running the same app with windows vps's and was seeing similar results. Could be nobody has tried it. Thanks!

Have you done the basics like a disk performance test to see what you can read/write outside of your BE app? It might not be related to BE at all.

Yes. Rates were comparable to what we are getting with our vm's under hyper-v. Whats wierd is we use BE Linux agent for linux vm's under onAPP and when testing on the same HV (host) as my windows vm's the speed is much faster then any other server we have. Which makes no sense to me. Still working on it. Again, purpose of this post was to find another soul out there running onAPP and doing windows vps's to compare notes about what they were using for backups. Thanks for all the troubleshooting suggestions guys, but if your not running onAPP with windows vps's then you can't answer my question. Onapp support has worked with me extensively, but they don't have BE. It may that onAPP windows vps's work fine with some other windows backup server but we own BE and like it and don't feel like buying something else.

If I were you I would attempt to work with the GPLPV author (James Harper) as well as the Xen mailing list. Take my advice or leave it, or continue to wait for On App support to figure it out...good luck (and yes, been there done that with GPLV which is the core of On App windows support) Last edited by FastServ; 12-08-2010 at 04:11 PM.

Heres the fix! Now my Backup Exec backups of Windows server vm's under onAPP work great!! http://www.jolokianetworks.com/70Kno..._GPLPV_is_slow
