Softlayer Cloud

Posted by sobes, 01-24-2011, 06:56 PM
I bumped this as I wasn't able to find an up-to-date answer. Now that it's been over 2 years, has SoftLayer's Cloudlayer solution improved? We're currently on it and have no major complaints, however we're preparing to launch a web application requiring 99.99%+ uptime that needs cloud hosting, and we are seriously considering SoftLayer. I'd very much appreciate any feedback on real, firsthand experience specifically with SoftLayer's Cloudlayer offering. Thanks! Paul.

If it's anything like their Dedicated Servers, then i would say it's good to go! - I guess the networks the same, so it should be good there..

I was going to try the Softlayer cloud but I see they charge $25 extra per month for WHM/Cpanel which is a little much in my opinion for a cloud server instance. Gigenet cloud charges $10 per month and VPS.net charges $10 per month.

$25 is a little high, but $10-15 is reasonable imho as the licenses run $200, and less for providers purchasing in bulk.

Agreed that $10 to $15 is reasonable for Cpanel on a cloud instance. But $25 per month is more than I used to pay for WHM/Cpanel for a dedicated server at the Planet! The Cpanel license shouldn't be 50% of the base cloud instance (i.e. a 1GB Softlayer cloud instance is $50, however the Cpanel license is $25, or 50% of the lowest price instance)

Well, in all fairness the cPanel license is what the cPanel license cost, the cloud server has no bearing on that. They're just charging a bit much imho.

You can always buy it externally?

You can get it for $15 at buycpanel.com

If they can sell it for $15 and make money, then so can Softlayer.
