Cloud Hosting?

Posted by brentJones, 01-25-2011, 07:47 AM
Hi guys! I'm new to this forum and I'm a little bit confused about what cloud hosting actually is. What's it about, what are the advantages? Can anybody explain it to me more clearly? And would you then recommend Netcetera hosting based in the UK as a reliable solution?

There several definitions as Cloud as been a buzz word for sometime now. But true Cloud hosting, is simply utilising the cloud (internet) to store, share and provision resources and data. Wiki helps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Hosting

Cloud hosting can be described in many ways, but in a hosting sense, it is 'Infrastructure as a service'. This basically means you get a Xen or VMware powered virtual machine, that lives in a grid of servers, that can move virtual machines between them without downtime, or recover automatically from hardware problems. All storage lives on a high end SAN attached to the grid, giving you complete independence from any local disk issues or limitations. You should be able to fully manage the machine through a web interface, api and apps, and be able to scale resources up and down on demand.

There are many interpretations of what cloud hosting/servers actually means. As there is no real clear definition of what it is, no at least not one thats widely accepted/known. Because of this I think at the moment the only real way to know what your actually buying, is to ask the hosts individually. I suspect if you were to compare two "cloud" providers, you will probably find them quite different in some areas.

The different/vendor specific names for the same aspect of the cloud don't always help. :|

I would consider cloud something that is easily scalable, something that can obtain High Availability. What I mean about high availability is, if a server is to crash, The infrastructure should know what to do with a failure, and be able to recover from a failure without human intervention. Depending on what you want to do with your Scalable, HA infrastructure is what you need to keep in mind. As there are many different solutions. Most solution only allow you to create VDS/VPS's while other solutions allow you to create very complex solutions with ease. I would just keep in mind what your looking to do.
